Spring has finally arrived in Bowling Green as another successful school year comes to a close! Before our students leave for the summer I would like to share the changes that will be coming fall semester.
Cybersecurity is, and will continue to be, a high priority for all of us. During spring semester, many faculty and staff were affected by the “iTunes card” scam. We have since placed “external” in the subject line to help users identify emails that originate outside of bgsu.edu and are not affiliated with the University.
By the start of fall semester, Duo for email will be in place for all faculty and staff. The email version of Duo will function exactly like that for MyBGSU. This will ensure that hackers cannot shadow or use your email.
IMAP email client use will be phased out over the summer, too. There are less than 150 clients who continue to use this client to access their BGSU email. The IMAP email protocol has a known exploited vulnerability.
The PeopleSoft HR and Student systems will be updated in May. This update will bring two new features to campus – data masking and mobile access.
Personal information that will be masked or hidden include: SSN, date of birth, bank accounts, passport numbers and driver’s license numbers. This provides an additional layer of security for your data!
Over the next 18 months we will gradually release mobile access features that will allow you to use your mobile devices for university tasks. Features like viewing your paycheck, scheduling a class, paying your bill or reaching your advisor are some that you can look forward to.
Scantron processing services will continue to be provided to classes on a 24-hour return basis for weeks 1-13 of the semester, and a 48-hour return basis for week 14 and finals weeks. This service will continue until the Provost has made a decision on a replacement or alternative process.
Heavy re-programming of multiple university systems will be needed this summer and fall to change out the old to new banks for PCards and the new financial institutions for 401K and 403B retirement plans.
Nine classrooms in the Musical Arts building will be renovated and updated this summer as general use active learning classrooms.
Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
John Ellinger, CIO
