BGSU will celebrate its 290th graduation in two ceremonies in the Stroh Center Friday (Dec. 15) and Saturday (Dec. 16). The December graduating class includes 954 candidates. Among the undergraduates, 56 will be presented associate degrees and 682 bachelor’s degrees. Of those, 142 have received honors for their high grade point averages.

Three of the Warriors are brand-new models purchased directly from the manufacturer, Piper Aircraft. For the last 10 weeks, Hatchlings, BGSU students selected to participate in The Hatch, have been working on business presentations with alumni mentors. This effort culminated in the pitch of their ideas to alumni investors in hopes of obtaining funding to “hatch” their venture.

Learning Design and Technology (LDT), formerly Advanced Technological Education, was BGSU’s first, online bachelor’s degree completion program ten years ago. Fifteen teams including 327 students from Northwest Ohio and Indiana middle and high schools competed in the daylong Falcon BEST Robotics Competition on October 24 at the BGSU Stroh Center. The University’s bachelor’s degree programs in Engineering Technology and Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology now have the added distinction of being accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, becoming the first ABET-accredited, http://www.abet.org, programs at BGSU.

The Visual Communication Technology (VCT) Packaging and Display (P&D) Lab, first dedicated in 2012, has moved from the Park Avenue facility to the Technology Building. Construction was completed on a new 1,000 square foot space. The lab features specialized lighting for viewing color, and special venting and power to accommodate an 80” VUTEK large-format color printer and CAD digital cutting table.

Douglas Furia from West Chester, Ohio, near Cincinnati, knew he wanted to study architectural engineering, but when it came to deciding between Bowling Green State University or the University of Cincinnati, he chose BGSU. Even though BGSU didn’t specially offer architectural engineering, it did offer architecture and environmental design, and construction management programs. BGSU also provided Furia more scholarship support than Cincinnati, so he decided to take double majors. He would learn the artistic and design background from architecture and the technical background from construction management.

Having spent his entire career in the military, before retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) Robert Gauthier decided to advance his education and career by completing a bachelor’s degree. At about the same time he retired from the Air Force in October 2013, he received a Bachelor of Science in Technology degree from BGSU, though he never stepped foot on the campus. His degree in learning design and technology (LDT) was done completely online and during times that were convenient for him to “attend classes.”

Dr. William Travers Jerome III was a change agent when he arrived in 1963 as the sixth president of BGSU. For one of his initiatives, Jerome hired Dr. Jerry Streichler to lead a major effort to develop and implement curricula that would more truly reflect the technology (processes and organization) of various categories of industry. The goal was to replace the “shop teacher” education programs with curricula that would better prepare teachers for the schools and also prepare specialists to serve in leadership positions in diverse industries.
