Dylan's Story

Dylan Fox - Wellness Connection Intern

Being involved with the Department of Recreation and Wellness has made an unforgettable impact on my career as a BGSU student. Not only has my connection with this department contributed to the enhancement of many personal skills in the professional workplace, it has also made my memories of BGSU that much better. Being involved with such a large and impactful entity on campus has truly made me feel like a BGSU Falcon. The level of dedication that I made to this department for the past two years and all of the skills that I developed translated to the classroom in many ways--meeting deadlines, writing quality papers, and submitting valuable class work, just to name a few. Not only did these skills help me in the classroom, they helped me achieve credibility and respect as an Executive Board Member of a prominent organization on campus, PRSSA. Without these enhanced skills attained through my experience with Recreation and Wellness, I truly believe that I would not have completed the same level of work as a student throughout my four years at BGSU.

There are many benefits to being a part of this department. If I had to choose the best one, however, I would choose the strong bond and kinship amongst all employees. Even if you do not personally know another employee within the department, you can easily communicate with them without feeling shy or out of place. Everyone is very friendly, personable, and easy to get along with. It was nice being part of a very large department but at the same time feeling like I was part of such a close-knit group of co-workers.

I believe that being a part of Recreation and Wellness contributed to my learning in these areas simply because I was always practicing them. While at work, I was always pushed to stay motivated by someone, pushed to be more creative, encouraged to think critically in a number of different ways, constantly communicating with co-workers and other individuals, and practicing leadership skills and/or seeing leadership skills exemplified first-hand by professional staff. Seeing and experiencing these things helped my learning in the classroom, out of the classroom, and set me up for successful learning in the future as well.

There are many connections that I now see between my work experience with the Department of Recreation and Wellness and my planned career in public relations/marketing. Some of those connections that I see and that I have already gained valuable experience with while working with the department include: communication skills in the professional work place, communication skills with diverse audiences, social media strategy, design, pricing promotional materials, meeting deadlines, attending meetings, facilitating interviews, effective written communication, copy editing, grammar, creative writing, creativity, persistence, and dedication.

Dylan was the creator of Stall Talk during 2012-13 and 2013-14 and has relocated to California to pursue a career in public relations.
