Leaders in Residence

Leaders in Residence is an in-hall workshop series on leadership and development for residential students and members of the Greek community. This experience assists students in assuming leadership positions in various organizations in other areas at BGSU. Students are nominated (or self-nominated) to participate in this program each year.

Leaders In Residence

Leaders In Residence (LIR) is the first of two programs offered by the Office of Residence Life centered on Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. It is a six week workshop series during the spring semester for on campus students who aspire to begin developing and hone their leadership skills. Each class meets one time per week for 2 hours. There are a total of six class meetings.  The program offers a forum for students to become involved, meet established leaders, recognize their leadership potential, and have fun while enhancing personal leadership abilities.

Advanced Leaders In Residence

After successful completion of LIR, students may continue to develop their leadership skills (through a Personal Best Leadership Project) by enrolling in Advanced Leaders in Residence (ALIR), UNIV 2100 course offered fall term. Students receive 1 credit hour and letter grade upon completing the course.


Leadership Academy

Leadership Academy is a day long conference hosted in the fall term by the Center for Leadership. The Academy is targeted at rejuvenating and developing skills for campuses leaders at the start of the academic year.

Residential Leadership Programs Outcomes

  • To encourage and assist students in becoming aware and to develop their leadership potential, style, and philosophy
  • To provide an opportunity for self-realization and for growth in individual social competencies and effectiveness
  • To foster the development of citizenship, social responsibility, values, and ethics
  • To prepare students for leadership roles, student staff positions, and paraprofessional roles on campus
  • To present students with opportunities that will assist them in making transitions to professional careers.
