IMPORTANT: The housing application is now open and the $200 initial payments can now be made. The room selection time in May is determined based on the DAY (not time) a student pays. Our system can handle 175 people at a time. If you can't get in, try again later. Everyone who pays today will be randomized and assigned a room selection time before those who pay tomorrow and so on. Please contact us at 419-372-2011 or reslife@bgsu.edu with any questions.

How Housing Selection Works

Selecting on-campus housing works like choosing a seat at a concert; students are able to view all available options and select any of the available rooms when it's their turn.

We assign selection dates and times to choose in the spring based on the date, not time, a student makes the $200 initial housing payment. We have a lot of on-campus living options that are affordable, comfortable and close to your classes. Every residence hall has its perks. PLUS, it has been proven that students who live on campus have a higher GPA – and more likely to graduate – faster than their peers who live off campus.

It's exciting to pick where you want to live, but it's important to remember housing choices vary based on availability and the date a student makes their initial housing payment. We can't guarantee everyone will receive their first choice, but we can guarantee you will love to be a Falcon!

STEP 1 | Be Admitted into BGSU

On-campus housing applications are open! New and transfer students can begin making their $200 initial housing payment on Tuesday, Nov. 13 — but students first need to be admitted to BGSU.  After being admitted to BGSU, completing the housing application and making the initial housing payment is the next step toward committing to BGSU.

Not admitted to BGSU yet?

Check your application status here and submit any missing credentials.

Application Status

Set up your MyBGSU account.

You will need an account to make the initial housing payment.

Set Up Account

STEP 2 | Complete the Housing Application | OPENS NOV. 13

After being admitted, in order to select on-campus housing, new and transfer students will need to login to their MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and complete the following: MyBGSU>Students Tab>New Students>My Room and Meals

  1. Accept the terms of the On-Campus Housing and Dining Agreement.
  2. Make the $200 initial housing payment.*
  3. Submit Health and Emergency Contact Information.
  4. Complete the Lifestyle Questionnaire.
  5. Optional: Students who wish to apply to live in a learning community will be able to do so during this step.

* The $200 initial housing payment is completely refundable until May 1, 2019 and secures the students place in the room selection process. Please note: Housing selection times are based on the DATE of payment, not TIME.

Helpful tip: After a student completes this step, their housing application will say it is incomplete until they select their room in May.

STEP 3 | Determine which housing selection timeline you need to follow.

Students should use one of the tabs below based on the type of on-campus room they will be selecting. If they are not living in a learning community room, they will follow the steps under the Standard Housing Selection tab. From there, follow the housing selection schedule listed.

Standard Housing Selection Calendar

Nov. 13, 2018 - May 17, 2019

Online Housing Applications open. After a new or transfer student is admitted into BGSU they can fill out the housing application (listed in step 2) and pay their $200 initial housing payment through May 17, 2019. Students can also apply to live in All Gender Housing and a learning community during this time period.

What is the $200 initial housing payment?!?

The $200 initial housing payment* is a required part of the housing application process. Making this payment shows a student is committed to BGSU. The day -not time- a student makes this payment determines their room selection time in May. Room selection times are randomized by payment date by a computer and takes place over a course of four days in May.

The housing payment is 100% refundable through May 1, 2019.

*Students who need financial assistance can contact the Office of Admissions to discuss housing deferral options.

Dec. 3, 2018 - Feb. 13, 2019

All Gender Housing Applications open. Students who wish to live in All Gender Housing need to fill out the All Gender Housing Request Form by 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2019. After this time, please email jlawrie@bgsu.edu for special consideration. Learn about the housing selection process on the All Gender Housing page.

All Gender Housing

Jan. 15 - May 1, 2019

Roommate matching takes place.  During this time, students can decide to match up with someone they already know, someone they get to know prior to room selection -or- they can decide not to match up with a student. Roommate matching is NOT required. If a student decides they do not want to match up with a roommate during this time, or they miss the deadline, they will select a spot in a room and the person who also selects that room is their roommate.

Did you know? 40% of students decide not to match with a roommate and go with a random roommate.

If a student wants to match up with a roommate, they MUST match through our system or we won't know they want to live together. Learn more about this process on our roommate website.

May 1, 2019

Last day to cancel the housing contract and receive the $200 refund. This is the last day students can cancel their Housing Contract and receive a full refund of the $200 initial housing payment. Students who cancel after this date are subject to the Forfeiture Schedule. This also applies to anyone receiving a deferral.

May 8, 2019 | After 3 p.m.

Room Selection Times are emailed. New students who have paid their $200 initial housing payment will receive a Room Selection Time sent to their BGSU email account after 3 p.m. Selection times are randomized by a computer based on the day a student pays, not time.

Please note: This does not include students who are have already been placed in All Gender or learning community rooms because they have already selected their rooms prior to this date.

ROOM SELECTION | May 13 - 16, 2019 | 3 - 8 p.m. Each Day

Based on the Room Selection Time assigned to the student, they will go into their MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and select their actual room.

  • Room Selection Times will be assigned between 3 – 8 p.m. each day.
  • The Office of Residence Life will remain open until 9 p.m. to help students with the process during this time.
  • After a student has access to the system, the can log back in and make changes through May 16.
  • During room selection, the student MUST also select their meal plan. New students must select a Custom meal plan option.
  • Students cannot choose a meal plan for their confirmed roommate.
  • If a student selects a room for their confirmed roommate and decides to choose a different room, the student no longer will be linked to their confirmed roommate and BOTH students must login and make a new selection.

This step is only required for students who did not select to live in All Gender Housing. All gender room selection will be hand assigned by the Office of Residence Life. Learning community (LC) members will follow this process to select their LC room but will select housing early. LC members need to follow the information listed under the Learning Community tab on this page.

Steps Prior to Room Selection

Follow these steps PRIOR to your housing selection date.

  1. First-year students who have made their initial housing payment by 5 p.m. on May 7, 2019 will receive a Room Selection Time sent to their BGSU email address.
  2. Room Selection Times will be emailed after 3 p.m. on May 8, 2019.
    • Students should review all of the housing options and create a preference list just in case their first choice is no longer available.
    • Review the BGSU Dining page and decide what meal plan option they want to choose. Meal plans are selected at the same time as room selection.
  3. The room selection email will include the date and time the student can login to select their residence hall and specific room. Remember to check your email.
  4. The assigned Room Selection Times are based on the day (not time) the student made their $200 Initial Housing Payment.

Steps During Room Selection

Follow these steps DURING your housing selection time.

  1. Students will need to login to their MyBGSU account to access their "My Room and Meals" account according to their Room Selection Time that was emailed to them.
  2. This process will be on a first come, first served basis.
  3. Information on how to pull-in roommates is located on the roommates web page. Students can also watch the video above which shows an example of this.
  4. The room selection system will remain open until 9 a.m. on May 16, 2019. Students wanting to make changes or select a different room will need to call the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011.

BGSU Learning Communities

Students from different learning communities. Group at a tailgate, group in Chicago and two students in class.

What is a Learning Community? Over 20 residential learning communities will be offered next year and are comprised of students who share a major or common interest. When a student joins one, they have a built-in friend group before they move-in.

Members of these communities have the unique opportunity to live in an assigned block of rooms — in the same residence hall — where they are surrounded by others who share their same interests, making it easier to meet friends and connections at BGSU.

Community members easily form study groups, participate in exclusive activities and trips and enjoy experiential learning opportunities beyond what is offered in the classroom.

The best part, community members tend to earn higher grades and graduate at higher rates compared to their classmates. Explore all of our communities to find the one for you.

Please note: Additional fees may apply.

Learning Community Housing Selection Calendar

If you are a member of a learning community and you would like to live in your community residence hall, please follow this calendar:

Now - March 14, 2019 | Join a learning community

Learning community applications are open. Each community has a set of rooms specifically designated to them. To sign up for one of these rooms, students first must apply and be accepted into the community by March 14, 2018. Students should complete the following steps:

  1. Apply here and login with your BGSU username and password
  2. Click on 'Add a New Community Enrollment Request' and choose your desired community and academic year/term
  3. Students can apply for up to two communities. The system will not allow a student to apply for a third community without cancelling their membership with one of the other communities.
Apply Now
After a student has submitted their request to join a community, they will receive an email from the Community Director approving their request. When it’s time for LC members to select their rooms, they will be able to view and select rooms within the designated community space in the community’s residence hall. For example, if a student chooses to join the Chapman learning community, they will select a room in Kohl Hall.

Nov. 13, 2018 - May 17, 2019

Online Housing Applications open. After a new or transfer student is admitted into BGSU they can fill out the housing application (listed in step 2) and pay their $200 initial housing payment through May 17, 2019. This is a required step for all new students.

What is the $200 initial housing payment?!?

The $200 initial housing payment* is a required part of the housing application process. Making this payment shows a student is committed to BGSU. Students who are not selecting a learning community room will be assigned their room selection time based on the day they make this payment.

The housing payment is 100% refundable through May 1, 2019.

*Students who need financial assistance can contact the Office of Admissions to discuss housing deferral options.

LEARNING COMMUNITY ROOM SELECTION | March 18 - May 1, 2019

If all of the above steps are completed, students will select their learning community room during this time. If a student is a member of a community that does not require them to live in a learning community room, and the student decides they do not want to live with their community, they would follow the standard room selection process. ONLY learning community rooms will be available during this time.

There are two different room selection processes that take place for learning community rooms. The two different processes are based on whether a student has been accepted before or after the learning community room selection process has started.

Accepted AFTER to March 18

Students who become a learning community member after the LC room selection process has started, will follow the process below:

  • The student will receive a room selection time 24-hours after they have been accepted into the community, as long as they have paid the $200 initial housing payment.
  • If a student is accepted on a Friday, they will receive their email the following Monday.

HOW TO SELECT A LEARNING COMMUNITY ROOM

Students will only be able to select from the block of rooms assigned to the community. Meaning, even if a hall has multiple learning communities in it, the only rooms a student can select are ones available to their community. The video below goes over the room selection process. Learning community members can use this as a guide but should follow the steps about roommate selection listed on this page because it could be slightly different for roommates in LC rooms.

Learning Community Roommates

If a LC member wants to choose their own roommate, they need to follow one of two processes depending on if their desired roommate is a member of their community or not. Some communities allow roommate pull-ins, meaning they can choose to live with someone from the same community or choose a roommate outside of the community. If the community doesn't allow pull-ins, the student must select a roommate who is a member of the community.

  • If both students are members of the same community, they can confirm their roommate through their BGSU 'My Room & Meals account'  before selecting their room.
  • During room selection, one student needs to select the room and then they can "pull-in" the other roommate into the room and select their personal meal plan.
  • The roommate then will need to login to the system and confirm the room assignment and select their own meal plan. This process is outlined in the video.

Roommate Information

The following communities allow non-community members to live in their community rooms. Students in these communities can select a roommate who is a member of their community or a non-member. If a students community is not listed, this means they must find a roommate who is also a member.

  • Academic Investment in Math and Science (AIMS)
  • ACTION
  • Air Force
  • Construction Management Community
  • Education and Human Development Community (EDHD)
  • Forensic Science
  • Health, Wellness and You
  • La Comunidad
  • Natural Health and Science Residential Community (NHSRC)
  • SEARCH

If a student's community is listed above, they are eligible to room with a non-member; however, they will not be able to assign their roommate through the room selection system. Here are the steps that need to be followed:

  1. Login to the room selection system when it's open and select an open room (a room that shows 2/2)
  2. Call the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011 and provide their name and their desired roommate’s name. The Office of Residence Life will assign your desired roommate to a room (as long as space is available)
  3. The roommate's room assignment will be set, but they will need to login during their selection time the week of May 13 - 16 to confirm their assignment and select a meal plan

If a student has any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011 or email at reslife@bgsu.edu.
