Future Student Housing Guide

You may be new to this process, but we have been doing this for years. Let us guide you through the Housing Selection Process, so all you have to worry about is how you are going to accessorize your new space and all the new friends you are going to make next year.

New students joining us for the first time in Fall of 2023 are required to live on campus unless you meet one of our housing exemptions.

Jan. 4-July 31 | Online Housing Application opens at 9 a.m. EST and remains open through July 31.

May 1 | The $200 initial housing payment must be made by 11:59 p.m. EST to receive a standard room selection time.

May 3 | Standard room selection times will be sent to BGSU emails after 3 p.m. EST.

May 8-11 | Students who complete their Housing & Dining Agreement select their room.

Room Selection Overview

When you are ready to commit to BGSU, the next step is to start your housing application.

The housing application process starts out by completing the Housing and Dining Agreement in MyBGSU where you will also make your $200 initial housing payment. Once the agreement is complete, you have a few optional steps you can consider; such as forming a Room Selection Group, joining a community, consider All Gender Housing and connecting with Accessibility Services if you need a housing accommodation.

If you decide not to join a learning community and you are not interested in living in All Gender Housing, the next step in the Housing Application is room selection.

Room selection times are 100% RANDOMIZED.
Selecting on-campus housing works like choosing a seat at a concert. You are able to view all available options and select any of the available rooms when it's your turn. The date you make your $200 initial housing payment does not influence the day and time you'll pick your room. We have a lot of on-campus living options that are affordable, comfortable and close to your classes. Every residence hall has its perks. PLUS, it has been proven that students who live on campus have a higher GPA and are likely to graduate faster than their peers who live off campus.

It's exciting to pick where you want to live, but it's important to remember housing choices vary based on availability. We can't guarantee everyone will receive their first choice, but we can guarantee you will love to be a Falcon!

Detailed Timeline & Important Information

STEP 1 | Be Admitted into BGSU

If you are going to be new to BGSU next fall, you can begin your housing application and make your $200 initial housing payment starting at 9 a.m. EST on Jan. 4 — but you first need to be admitted to BGSU. After being admitted, completing the housing application and making the initial housing payment is the next step toward committing to BGSU.

Not admitted to BGSU yet?

Check your application status here and submit any missing credentials.

Admitted to BGSU

You will need a MyBGSU account to make the initial housing payment.

Set Up Account

STEP 2 | Complete the Housing Application | Opens at 9 a.m. EST on Jan. 4

After being admitted, in order to select on-campus housing, you will need to log in to your MyBGSU Housing and Meal Plan Application, located in the Housing & Residence Life section, and complete the following:

  1. Accept the terms of the On-Campus Housing and Dining Agreement.
  2. Make the $200 initial housing payment.*
  3. Submit Health and Emergency Contact Information.
  4. Complete the Lifestyle Questionnaire.
  5. Select a meal plan. New students must select a custom meal plan option.
  6. Optional: Students who wish to apply to live in a learning community will be able to do so during this step.

Please note: The day you make your housing payment does NOT determine your room selection time. Room selection times are 100% randomized.

* The $200 initial housing payment is completely refundable until May 1, 2023, if you decide you no longer want to attend BGSU.

How to Complete the Agreement if you are Under 18

If you are under the age of 18 at the time you need to fill out the Housing & Dining Agreement, there are a few additional steps you need to follow.

  • Make sure your parent or guardian has access to their email. They will need to digitally sign the agreement and the system will need to email them access during this process.
  • It will be up to you, the student, to provide the first name, last name and email address of your parent or guardian.
  • It is VERY important you provide the exact spelling your parent or guardian will use. Example: If you type 'Sue' and your guardian types 'Susan', the system will not recognize this as a match.

STEP 3 | Follow the Room Selection Timeline

You should use one of the tabs below based on the type of on-campus room you will be selecting – Standard Room or Learning Community Room. If you are not living in a learning community room, you will follow the steps under the Standard Room Selection tab. From there, follow the room selection schedule listed.

Standard Room Selection Calendar

Jan. 4, 2023 at 9 a.m. EST | Online Housing Applications Open

After a new or transfer student is admitted into BGSU they can fill out the housing application (listed in step 2) and pay their $200 initial housing payment by May 1, 2023 to participate in housing selection. Students can also apply to live in All Gender Housing and a learning community.

What is the $200 initial housing payment?!?

The $200 initial housing payment* is a required part of the housing application process. Making this payment shows a student is committed to BGSU. Room selection times are randomized by a computer and take place over a course of four days in May.

The housing payment is 100% refundable through May 1, 2023.

*Students who need financial assistance can contact the Office of Admissions at 419-372-2478 to discuss housing deferral options.

Jan. 4 - May 1, 2023 | All Gender Housing Applications Open

Students who wish to live in All Gender Housing need to fill out the All Gender Housing Request Form.

All Gender Housing

Jan. 4 - May 1, 2023 | RSGs Can Be Formed

Did you know? 40% of students decide not to match with a roommate and go with a random roommate.

Room selection groups (RSG) can be formed. You can increase your chances to live with your preferred roommate by joining a room selection group with one of your friends. Students in a group will receive the same selection time, making it easier to find a room together, or close together. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee students will be roommates, even if they are in a group.

If you would like to receive the same selection time as your friend, you can create a room selection group in your housing application located in your myBGSU My Room and Meals Account. Learn more about this process on our roommate website.

Roommate Selection Process

May 1, 2023 | Last Day To Cancel Housing And Receive $200 Refund

This is the last day students can cancel their Housing Contract and receive a full refund of the $200 initial housing payment. Students who cancel after this date are subject to the Forfeiture Schedule. This also applies to anyone receiving a deferral on their initial housing payment.

May 1, 2023 | IMPORTANT DEADLINES

New and transfer students have until 11:59 EDT on May 1 to complete their On-campus Housing and Dining Agreement and make their $200 initial housing payment if they want select their room between May 8-11. Students can still receive a room after these dates but there will be limited availability.

This is also the last day to form a Room Selection Group (RSG). RSG requests must be submitted and confirmed by the second student PRIOR to 11:59 EDT on May 1. If both steps are not complete by the deadline, you will receive separate room selection times which will make it more difficult to find a room together and may require you to select a random roommate.

May 3, 2023 | Room Selection Times Emailed After 3 p.m. EST

New students who have paid their $200 initial housing payment will receive a Room Selection Time sent to their BGSU email account after 3 p.m. EST. Selection times are randomized  and are not influenced by the date a student makes their initial housing payment.

Please note: This does not include students in learning community rooms because they have already selected their rooms prior to this date.

May 8-11, 2023 | ROOM SELECTION

Based on the Room Selection Time assigned to the student, they will go into their MyBGSU "Housing and Meal Plan Application"  and select their actual room.

  • Room Selection Times will be assigned between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. EST each day.
  • After a student has access to the system, they can log back in and make changes through the end of room selection.
  • If a student selects a room for their confirmed Room Selection Group (RSG) member and then decides to choose a different room, the student no longer will be linked to their RSG and BOTH students must login and make a new selection.

Learning Community (LC) members will follow this process to select their LC room but will select housing early. LC members need to follow the information listed under the Learning Community tab on this page.

Steps Prior to Room Selection

Follow these steps PRIOR to your housing selection date.

  1. First-year students who have made their initial housing payment by 11:59 p.m. EST on May 1, 2023 will receive a Room Selection Time sent to their BGSU email address.
  2. Room Selection Times will be emailed after 3 p.m. EST on May 3, 2023.
    • Students should review all of the housing options and create a preference list just in case their first choice is no longer available.
  3. The Room Selection email will include the date and time the student can login to select their residence hall and specific room. Remember to check your email.
  4. The assigned Room Selection Times are randomized and not based on the day you made your $200 initial housing payment.

Steps During Room Selection

Follow these steps DURING your housing selection time.

  1. Students will need to login to their MyBGSU account and click on "Housing & Meal Plan Application" according to their Room Selection Time that was emailed to them.
  2. This process will be on a first come, first served basis.
  3. The room selection system will remain open until 9 a.m. EST on May 12, 2023. After this date, students wanting to make changes or select a different room will need to fill out the Room Change Request form that opens on May 24, 2023 at 9am EST.

BGSU Learning Communities

Students from different learning communities. Group at a tailgate, group in Chicago and two students in class.

What is a Learning Community? Over 17 learning communities will be offered next year and are comprised of students who share a major or common interest. When you join a community, you have a built-in friend group before they move-in.

Members of these communities have the unique opportunity to live in an assigned block of rooms — in the same residence hall — where you will be surrounded by others who share their same interests, making it easier to meet friends and connections at BGSU.

Community members easily form study groups, participate in exclusive activities and trips and enjoy experiential learning opportunities beyond what is offered in the classroom.

The best part, community members tend to earn higher grades and graduate at higher rates compared to their classmates. Explore all of our communities to find the one for you.

Please note: Additional fees may apply.

Jan. 4 – March 29, 2023 | Learning Community Applications Open

Each community has a set of rooms specifically designated to them. To sign up for one of these rooms, you first must apply and be accepted into the community. To do this, please follow these simple steps:

  1. Apply here and login with your BGSU username and password
  2. Click on 'Add a New Community Enrollment Request' and choose your desired community and academic year/term
  3. You can apply for up to two communities. The system will not allow you to apply for a third community without cancelling another membership.

After you submit a request to join a community, you will receive an email from the Community Director approving the request. When it’s time for LC members to select their rooms, they will be able to view and select rooms within the designated community space in the community’s residence hall. For example, if a student chooses to join the Chapman learning community, they will select a room in Kohl Hall.

Please note: Some communities do not require their members to live in their room block. Communities without this requirement can still accept new members through August. Because the Office of Residence Life does not manage the learning communities, you will need to contact the community director with any questions or accommodation requests.

Jan. 4, 2023 | Online Housing Applications Open 3 p.m. EST

After you are admitted into BGSU you can fill out the housing & dining agreement (listed in step 2) and pay your $200 initial housing payment. To participate in learning community room selection, these two items need to be completed by no later than March 29, 2023. The housing payment is a required step for all new students.

What is the $200 initial housing payment?!?

The $200 initial housing payment* is a required part of the housing application process. Making this payment shows a student is committed to BGSU. Students who are not selecting a learning community room will be randomly assigned their room selection time.

The housing payment is 100% refundable through May 1, 2023.

April 10-13, 2023 | Learning Community Room Selection

If all of the above steps are completed, you will be able to select your learning community room during this time. If you are a member of a community that does not require you to live in a learning community room, and you decide you do not want to live in your community's room block, will follow the standard room selection process instead of this process. ONLY learning community rooms will be available during this time.

There are two different room selection processes that take place for learning community rooms. The two different processes are based on whether your membership is accepted before or after the learning community room selection process has started.

  • Arts Village
  • Business District
  • Chapman Learning Community
  • Honors Learning Community

If you see your learning community listed below, you can be roommates with a member of the same community -or- you can choose to be roommates with a non-member. If your community is not listed below, that means the community has a members-only room block.

HOW TO SELECT A LEARNING COMMUNITY ROOM

You will only be able to select a room assigned to your community. Meaning, even if a residence hall has multiple learning communities in it, the only room block you can select from are the ones available to your community.

Learning Community Roommates

If you want to choose who you live with, you need to follow one of two processes depending on if your desired roommate is a member of your community or not. Some communities allow roommate pull-ins, meaning you can choose to live with a member or non-member of your community. If your community doesn't allow pull-ins, you must live with a member of your community.

If you don't know someone already in your community, you can join the BGSU Class of 2026 Facebook Group and connect with someone – Or, you can pick a room and the person who also picks your room will be your roommate. You will already know you have something in common because you both joined the same community!!

  • If you and your friend are both members of the same community, you can confirm your roommate through the BGSU 'Housing & Meal Plan Application' before selecting your room.
  • During LC room selection, one student needs to select the room and then can "pull-in" the other student into the room.
  • The second student will then need to login to the system and confirm the room assignment.

Learn how to find a roommate

If the person you want to be roommates with is not a member of your community, you first need to find out if you community allows non-members to live in their room block.

If your community allows non-members to live in their room block, you and your friend need to follow these steps:

  1. Member: Log in to you the housing and meal plan application when LC selection opens up and select a room assigned to your room block.
    • Once your room is assigned, call the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011 and provide your name and your friend's name. If the second bed is still open in the room you selected, your friend will be hand-assigned to the room.
  2. Non-Member: Your friend who is a not a member of the community will then be assigned to the room – however, they will still need to log into the system during Standard Room Selection to confirm their room assignment.

April 14, 2023 | Learning Community Room Selection Shuts Off 9 a.m. EST

Students who selected a LC Room | If you assigned yourself to a LC room during this process, you will not be able to make adjustments to your room selection until standard room selection is complete. You will also not receive a standard room selection time because you already have an assignment.

Students who did NOT select a LC Room | If you did not select a LC room before this date, you may not be able to live in your community room block, will receive a standard room selection time and will be required to select a room during standard room selection. It's important to note some LCs require members to live within the community. If you do not select a room before the deadline, you may loose the opportunity to be a member of your community.

May 1, 2023 | Last Day To Cancel Housing And Recieve $200 Refund

This is the last day you can cancel your Housing Contract and receive a full refund of the $200 initial housing payment. If you cancel after this date, you are subject to the Forfeiture Schedule. This also applies to anyone receiving a deferral.

Requests on both forms are granted on a first come, first served basis and we process requests throughout the summer. You will be notified through your BGSU email if your request is approved. On average, we are able to fulfill 65-70% of the requests we receive but this is solely determined by factors outside of our control. Requests can only be granted if space becomes available.
