Hall Closing & Break Housing Information

When the University closes for breaks, the Office of Residence Life encourages students to visit family and friends – and to enjoy the holiday break. On this page you will find information about checking out of your residence hall and information about how to request to live on campus during break when the University is closed.

Housing During Breaks

2022 Winter Break

  • The residence halls officially close for winter break at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022. 
  • You will be able to move in at your selected date and time on January 6, 7, or 8, 2023.

Winter Break Closing Checklist

  • Clean your room
  • Empty all trash and take it to the dumpster
  • Take all perishable food items with you
  • Empty room recycling containers and take it to the larger recycling containers in the hall or lobbies
  • Leave the heat on (so the pipes will not freeze in the event of cold weather)
  • Close and lock the windows
  • Unplug everything from wall outlets
    • Defrost refrigerators in advance and remove all perishable belongings
    • Unplug fish tanks and take fish with you for break    
  • Leave curtains open, except on the ground floor (for security purposes)
  • Ensure window safety bar is in place and window is locked
  • Take home any valuables
  • Make sure furniture is not blocking room doors or windows
  • Turn off all the lights
  • Lock the door; take key and BGSU ID with you

Need a Place to Stay?

  • On-campus housing will be available to current residents for a fee. You will need to sign-up online through your MyBGSU "Housing & Meal Plan Application" account. You will select "Manage My Housing" and complete the application.
  • There is a weekly rate $210 per week. The weekly rates start on Sundays; students staying in the halls as of Sunday for a given week will be billed to their Bursar account for the entire week.  After billing is applied to a student's account for a given break week, it is no longer refundable and the student is obligated to pay the balance.
  • All students staying for Winter Break will be staying in Kreischer for the break, regardless of their current housing assignment.  All students will be assigned a vacant room.
  • Students will be notified via your BGSU email of your approval and any additional instructions starting on Dec. 2.

APPLICATION OPENS | Nov. 14, 2022
APPLICATION CLOSES | Dec. 1, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.
APPROVALS SENT | By Dec. 2 along with other instructions.
FEE | $210 per week

2022 Thanksgiving Break

  • The residence halls officially close at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022. 
  • The residence halls will reopen at Noon on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022.

Thanksgiving Break Closing Checklist

  • Clean your room
  • Empty all trash and take it to the dumpster
  • Empty room recycling containers and take it to the larger recycling containers in the hall or lobbies
  • Leave the heat on (so the pipes will not freeze in the event of cold weather)
  • Close and lock the windows
  • Leave curtains open, except on the ground floor (for security purposes)
  • Take home any valuables
  • Make sure furniture is not blocking room doors or windows
  • Turn off all the lights
  • Lock the door; take key and BGSU ID with you

Need a Place to Stay?

  • On-campus housing will be available to current residents with extenuating circumstances. You will need to sign-up online through your MyBGSU "Housing & Meal Plan Application" account. You will select "Manage My Housing" and complete the application.
  • There is a flat rate of $120 for the Thanksgiving Break period. This rate is the same no matter how many days the student is staying.
  • Students will be relocated to Kreischer for Thanksgiving Break. Students will be assigned to a room that is not currently occupied or to a lounge space. Depending on demand, there is a possibility that students will have a roommate.
  • Students will be notified via your BGSU email of your approval and any additional instructions starting on Nov. 10.

2023 Spring Break

  • The residence halls officially close for spring break at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 4, 2023.
  • The residence halls will reopen at Noon on Sunday, Mar. 12, 2023.

  • Leave the heat on (so the pipes will not freeze in the event of cold weather)
  • Close and lock the windows

  • There is no cost to stay on campus during the Spring Break period, but you are required to sign up in order to stay on campus.
  • Students will be assigned to Kreischer for the break period.  Students will be assigned to a room that is not currently occupied or to a lounge space. Depending on demand, there is a possibility that students will have a roommate.
  • Students will be notified via your BGSU email of your approval and any additional instructions starting on Feb. 24.

APPLICATION OPENS | Feb. 6, 2023
APPLICATION CLOSES | Feb. 24, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.
APPROVALS SENT | Starting Feb. 24, 2023 along with other instructions.
FEE | None

PLEASE NOTE: You may be assigned to temporary housing, meaning you will not be assigned to your current room or hall. If this occurs, you will not be assigned a space that someone is currently living in, it will be a vacant room that is available.
