Housing During Breaks

When the University closes for breaks, the Office of Residence Life encourages students to visit family and friends – and to enjoy the holiday break.

Departure Procedure

You will be given a Break Closing Checklist by your Resident Advisor. This form should be completed and signed by all roommates prior to leaving for break. You also need to complete the following before leaving:

  • Clean your room
  • Empty all trash and take it to the dumpster
  • Empty room recycling containers and take it to the larger recycling containers in the hall or lobbies
  • Unplug all appliances - See information about refigerators and fish tanks below.
  • Leave the heat on (so the pipes will not freeze in the event of cold weather)
  • Close and lock the windows
  • Leave curtains open, except on the ground floor (for security purposes)
  • Take home any valuables
  • Make sure furniture is not blocking room doors or windows
  • Turn off all the lights
  • Lock the door; take key and PED with you

REFRIGERATORS AND FISH TANKS

Fish tanks and refrigerators can be left plugged-in during Thanksgiving Break and Spring Break. During Winter Break, students must clean out and unplug their refrigerators and fish need to be relocated and the tank (if left behind) unplugged.

2018-19 Winter Break Opening and Closing Schedule

For students NOT taking classes during Winter Session.
  • The residence halls officially close at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018.
  • The residence halls will re-open at Noon on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019.
  • Classes resume on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019.

Need housing during Winter Break or Winter Session?

On-campus housing will be available to current residents with extenuating circumstances -OR- if they are enrolled in Winter Session for a fee. If you are in need of on-campus housing during this time, which includes Saturday, Dec. 15, 2019 and Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, you will need to sign-up online through your MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and complete the application.

APPLICATION OPENS | Nov. 26, 2018
APPLICATION CLOSES | Dec. 10, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.
FEE | Fees are based on the housing package you choose. See below for more details. – If you request housing after Dec. 10, you will be assessed a $25 late fee in addition to the cost of break housing.

PLEASE NOTE You may be assigned to a temporary housing, meaning you will not be assigned to your current room or hall. If this occurs, you will not be assigned a space that someone is currently living in, it will be a vacant room that is available. You may also be assigned a temporary roommate through this process who also requested Break Housing and will have limited on-campus dining options. Review the dining location hours.


HOUSING FOR STUDENTS DURING WINTER SESSION ONLY:

JAN. 2 - 27 | Students who have a need to stay on campus during Winter Session can select one of the following packages. The daily rate will be determined based on whether a student is taking on-campus classes or not.

Winter Session Package 1

Package 1 is for students who need to live on campus because they are taking on-campus classes. Students only taking online classes need to select package 2 if they wish to live on campus during this time.

$480 | Jan. 2 – 27
Check-in | Jan. 1 after 10 a.m.

Winter Session Package 2

Package 2 is for students who are not enrolled in winter session or only taking online courses. Students can choose which week they want to move-in between Jan. 2 - 27. They can live on campus the week before Spring Semester starts or all four weeks.

$175 per week | How much a student pays is based on the week they decide they want to move-in.

  • Jan. 2 - 27 | $700
  • Jan. 7 - 27 | $525
  • Jan. 14 - 27 | $350
  • Jan. 21 - 27 | $175

Check-in | Students staying during the entire Winter Session can check-in on Monday, Jan. 1 after 10 a.m. After Jan. 1, students can check-in after 10 a.m. the Monday they signed up for. 

Students will not be able skip weeks.


HOUSING FOR WINTER BREAK NOT WINTER SESSION

Students who have a need to stay on campus during the winter break, without taking any on-campus classes, can choose between the following packages. The daily rate for students who are not enrolled in Winter Session or only taking online courses will be $25.00.

Package A

$75 | Dec. 15 – 17
3 days after closing.

Package B

$75 | Jan. 25 – 27
3 days prior to opening.

Package C

$150 | Dec. 15 – 17 & Jan. 25 – 27
Packages A and B.

Package D

$1,200 | Dec. 15, 2018 – Jan. 27, 2019
The Entire Break.

Upon completing the application, you will receive an email from the Office of Residence Life approving your Break Housing Request after Dec. 10 with additional instructions. If you are assigned temporary housing, you will be given a new temporary room assignment for the break along with instructions and procedures for checking into your temporary space. After the break, your student bill will be charged the fee for staying on campus.


FAQs - Winter Session (Jan. 2 -27)

If you were assigned temporary housing over Winter Session, you will check-out of your temporary space and into your academic year assignment starting at noon on Jan. 27, 2019. 

If you were living in your assigned room for the academic year, there is no need to check-out.

If you are staying for an on-campus academic class, you will be charged $480. If you are staying for a non-academic purpose or only taking online courses, you will be charged a weekly rate:

  • Jan. 2 - 27 | $700
  • Jan. 7 - 27 | $525
  • Jan. 14 - 27 | $350
  • Jan. 21 - 27 | $175

On Nov. 29, Dining Services made a decision to no longer require meal plans for students living on-campus during Winter Break or Winter Session. Meal Plans are available if a student would like to purchase one. All questions about the meal plan options can be answered by Dining Services. The Office of Residence Life does not oversee meal plans.

The Winter Session Housing application will open on Nov. 26, 2018. It will be located in your MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account.

2019 Spring Break Closing & Opening Schedule

  • The residence halls officially close at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019.
  • The residence halls will re-open at Noon on Sunday, March 24, 2019.
  • There are NO classes the week of March 18 – 22, 2019.
  • Classes resume on Monday, March 25, 2019

  • Classes resume on Monday, Nov. 26, 2018.

HOW TO REQUEST BREAK HOUSING

  1. Before submitting an application, review the Break Housing Policies and Agreement for further details
  2. Login to your MyBGSU account
  3. Go to the Students tab>Residence Life & Housing>My Room and Meals>Application
  4. Check the box next to the break period you wish to sign up for and then follow the on-screen instructions
  5. Upon completing this application, you will receive an email from The Office of Residence Life approving your Break Housing Request with additional instructions. If you are assigned temporary housing, you will be given a new and temporary room assignment for the break along with instructions and procedures for checking into your temporary space. 
  6. After the break, your student bill will be charged the Break Housing Fee (if applicable) for staying on campus during the break.
