If you received a notice stating that your Housing Status is either Required or Eligible for housing, you have found the right Housing Selection Guide. If you received a notice stating that you are Not Guaranteed Housing, you can find more information about your Housing Status here.

The Housing Selection Process is different when you are returning to BGSU, use this guide to help you along the way. We look forward to having you back on campus again next year and please reach out to our office if you have any questions. Our staff is happy to assist you any way they can.

Important Dates

Dec. 1, 2017 – Feb. 1, 2018 | Housing Applications open at 9 a.m. and remain open through Feb. 1.

Feb. 8, 2018 | Housing Selection Times will be emailed after 3 p.m.

Feb. 12 – 16, 2018 | Students who paid the $200 Initial Housing Payment select their room.*

June 1, 2018 | Last day to receive a refund of the $200 Initial Housing Payment.

*The $200 Initial Housing Payment does not determine the assigned Housing Selection Time for Returning Students. Selection times are randomized by a computer and not based on completed credit hours or payment date. Please note, there will be a different housing selection time for students in All Gender Housing and the University Apartments.

Application Steps

BEFORE YOU START | Know Your Housing Status

Soon, every student currently living on campus will receive an email about their Housing Status for the next Academic School Year. A student's status will either fall under Required, Eligible or Not Guaranteed Housing.

It is very important that you know your Housing Status. You can learn more about your Housing Status here or contact our office if you are unsure what your status is.

Once you know your Housing Status is either Required or Eligible, follow the steps on this page to help you select your housing for the next Academic School Year.

PHASE 1 | Submit Required Documents – Required

Log in to your MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and complete the following: MyBGSU>Students Tab>New Students>My Room and Meals

  1. Accept the terms of the On-Campus Housing and Dining Agreement.
  2. Pay your $200 Initial Housing Payment.*
  3. Submit your Health and Emergency Contact Information.
  4. Complete the Lifestyle Questionnaire.
  5. Optional: Students who wish to apply to live in Learning Community will be able to do so during this step.

* The $200 Initial Housing Payment does not determine the assigned Housing Selection Time for Returning Students. Selection times are randomized by a computer and not based on completed credit hours or payment date.

OPTIONAL STEP | Find Your Fit And Roommate 

This optional step for students who want to choose their own roommate and/or applied to live in All Gender Housing, a Learning Community or the University Apartments in Phase 1.

Roommates | In December, roommate groups can be formed. Returning Students who are eligible to live on campus and would like to choose their roommate, can create/join Roommate Groups in their Housing Application located in their myBGSU My Room and Meals Account. The deadline to join a Roommate Group is on Feb. 1, 2018.

University Apartments | After all the required steps of Phase 1 are completed, Students who wish to live in the University Apartments can request to do so by filling out the application starting Dec. 1, 2017 - Feb. 1, 2018.

University Apartments Application

If you choose to live in the University Apartments, you will NOT receive a Housing Selection time in Phase 3. You will follow a slightly different housing process than the rest of the Returning Students. You can learn more under the Room Selection Instructions tab on this page.

All Gender Housing  | After all the required steps of Phase 1 are completed, Students who wish to live in All Gender Housing (AGH) can fill out the All Gender Housing Application starting Dec. 1, 2017 - Feb. 1, 2018.

AGH is a housing option created to foster an inclusive, safe and respectful community where students can live together with any student regardless of sex, gender, gender identity/expression or sexual orientation. AGH is located in Founders Hall and will be open to any interested students.

ALL GENDER HOUSING REQUEST

If you choose to live in All Gender Housing, you will NOT receive a Housing Selection time in Phase 3. You will follow a slightly different housing process than the rest of the Returning Students. You can learn more under the Room Selection Instructions tab on this page.

Please note: Students will not be placed in AGH unless they request this option.

FINAL PHASE | Room Selection – Required *

In February, students who have completed Phase 1 will be assigned a Room Selection Time to go into their MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and select their actual room for the next Academic School Year:

  1. Check your BGSU email for your assigned date and time.
  2. Select your room on your assigned date and time in May. Please note: Your Room Selection Time will be randomly assigned.
  3. If you have special/medical housing accommodation requests, they must be made in February.
  4. Students who applied to live in a Learning or Theme Community, will be assigned a room selection time at the same time as everyone else in this phase.

* This step is only required for students who did not select to live in All Gender Housing or the University Apartments. If you choose to live in one of these options, you will select your room before this step begins which will complete your Housing Application Process.

October 2017 – July 31, 2018

Early October
Eligibility Letters are sent. A letter will be sent via email to each student currently living on campus letting them know if they are eligible to sign up for on-campus housing for the next Academic School Year. The letter will also inform students about the next steps of the Housing Selection Process.


Dec. 1, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Phase 1 of the Housing Selection Process Starts.
Online Housing Applications open. Starting at 9 a.m. on Dec. 1, Returning Students who are eligible to live on campus can fill out the required online Housing Application and pay their $200 Initial Housing Payment through Feb. 1, 2018.

Students can also apply to live in All Gender Housing, a Learning Community and the University Apartments during this time period.

Dec. 1, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Phase 2 of the Housing Selection Process Starts.
Roommate groups can be formed. Starting at 9 a.m. on Dec. 1, Returning Students who are eligible to live on campus and would like to choose their roommate, can create/join Roommate Groups in their Housing Application located in their myBGSU My Room and Meals Account. The deadline to join a Roommate Group is on Feb. 1, 2018.

Request to live in the University Apartments. After a student completes all the required steps of Phase 1, students who wish to live in the University Apartments need to fill out the application by Feb. 1, 2018.

Request to live in All Gender Housing. After a student completes all the required steps of Phase 1, students who wish to live in All Gender Housing need to fill out the All Gender Housing Request Form by 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2018. After this time, please email jlawrie@bgsu.edu for special consideration.

Feb. 2, 2018 Part of Phase 2
All Gender Housing placements are sent. The All Gender Housing Application is open from Dec. 1, 2017 - Feb. 1, 2018. Students who requested to live in All Gender Housing will be notified of their application status along with their official room assignment. After this time, please email jlawrie@bgsu.edu for special consideration. 

  • All Gender Housing room assignments will be completed by the Office of Residence Life.
  • Any roommate and other special preference information will be collected in the request form and will be utilized when the student is assigned.

Feb. 2, 2018 Part of Phase 2
University Apartment Apartment Selection Times are sent. The All Gender Housing Application is open from Dec. 1, 2017 - Feb. 1, 2018. Students who requested to live in the University Apartments will be notified of their application status. If approved, students will also be given their official apartment selection time that will happen between Feb. 5 – 9, 2018.

Please note: a roommate group must be identified by the apartment applicant in order to be approved to live in them.


Feb. 5 – 9, 2018 Part of Phase 2.
University Apartment housing selection is open. Students who have been selected to live in the University Apartments will be assigned a day to come to the Office of Residence Life in person between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to select their apartment and room. Only one person per apartment group is required to come select the apartment/rooms. 

Please note: This will complete the Housing Selection Process for apartment residents.


Feb. 8, 2018 The Final Phase (Phase 3) of the Housing Section Process begins.
Housing Selection Times are emailed.
Returning Students who have paid their $200 Initial Housing Payment will receive a Housing Selection Time sent to their BGSU email account after 3 p.m. Selection times are randomized by a computer and not based on completed credit hours or Initial Housing Payment date.

Please note: This does not include students who are have already been placed in the University Apartments or All Gender Housing.


Feb. 12 – 16, 2018 Part of Phase 3
Returning Students will select their actual room. Based on the Housing Selection Time assigned to the student, they will go into their MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and select their actual room.

  • Housing Selection Times will be assigned between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
  • After selecting a room, students will be asked to select a meal plan.

Please note: Students who are selecting to live in a Learning or Theme Community will follow this same process.


Feb. 20 – March 1, 2018 Part of Phase 3

Returning Students can go into the housing system and change their room assignments. If the student does not select a room during their assigned Housing Selection Time, they can still select housing up until March 1, 2018.


March 2, 2018 after 9 a.m. End of Phase 1
Online Housing Applications shuts off. After 9 a.m., Students will have to contact the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011 or reslife@bgsu.edu to be assigned housing. Assignments will be granted on the date they apply for housing if the following has been completed:

  • The $200 Initial Housing Payment has been paid -or- has the appropriate exemptions

Students will be sent a confirmation email to their BGSU email once they have been assigned.


April 2, 2018 at 9 a.m.
Waitlist for Falcon Heights, Founders Hall and University Apartments opens. Returning Students who already have a fall room assignment, and wish to be re-assigned to a room in Falcon Heights, Founders Hall or the University Apartments can fill out the online waitlist.


May 31, 2018 Part of Phase 3
Specialized Housing Accommodations Form is due.
The Office Accessibility Services and the Office of Residence Life work together to coordinate housing accommodations for students with disabilities and chronic health conditions. If you would like to request a housing accommodation, you first must be registered with Accessibility Services and then fill out the Specialized Housing Accommodations Form and return it one of three ways:

June 1, 2018
Last day to receive your $200 refund. This is the last day Students can cancel their Housing Contract and receive a full refund of the $200 Initial Housing Payment. Students who cancel after this date are subject to the Forfeiture Schedule. This also applies to anyone receiving a deferral.


July 31, 2018 End of Phase 3
2018-19 Housing Selection Ends. This is the last day New, Returning and Transfer Students can make their $200 Initial Housing Payment online for the next Academic School Year and complete their Housing Application. Students can still apply for housing after this date, but must be cleared by the Office of the Bursar before being assigned to housing.


Aug. 1, 2018
Students eligible for housing, who did not complete the Housing Selection Process before this date, must contact the Office of the Bursar first to get cleared prior to contacting the Office of Residence Life to applying for housing.

Room Selection Instructions check

Room Selection takes place Feb. 12 – 16, 2018

Traditional Room Selection

For all students not livinging in All Gender Housing or the University Apartments.

Prior to Room Selection

  • Returning Students who completed Phase 1 have made their Initial Housing Payment by 5 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2018 will receive an assigned Room Selection Time sent to their BGSU email address.
  • Room Selection Times will be emailed after 3 p.m. on Feb. 8, 2018.
    • Students should review all of the housing options and create a preference list just in case the first choice is no longer available.
    • Review the BGSU Dining page and decide what meal plan option you want to choose. You will select a meal plan at this time as well.
  • The Room Selection Time email will include the date and time the student can log in to select their Residence Hall and specific room.  Remember to check your email.
  • The assigned Room Selection Times are randomly assigned by a computer and not based on when the $200 Initial Housing Payment is paid.

During your Room Selection Time

  • Students will need to log in to their MyBGSU account to access their "My Room and Meals" account according to their Room Selection Time that was emailed to them. MyBGSU>Students Tab>New Students>My Room and Meals
  • This process will be on a first come, first served basis. 
  • The room selection system will remain open through March 1, 2018. Students wanting to make changes or select a different room will need to call the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011.

All Gender Housing Room Selection

For students who are liviging in All Gender Housing.

Prior to Room Selection

  • Students who wish to live in the University Apartments must fill out the All Gender Housing Application before Feb. 1, 2018.
  • In the application, students can fill out roommate informaiton and any other preferences they would like to make.

Room Selection

On Feb. 2, 2018, Students will be notified of their application status sent to their BGSU email. Students who have been selected to live in All Gender Housing, will not follow the traditional room selection process outlined above. Instead...  

  • In the application status email sent on Feb. 2, the students official room assignment will be included.
  • All Gender Housing room assignments will be completed by the Office of Residence Life.
  • Any roommate and other special preference information will be collected in the request form and will be utilized when the student is assigned.

University Apartment Room Selection

For students who are liviging in the University Apartments.

Returning Students who are eligible to live on campus can apply to live in the University Apartments. Students interested in living in the apartments must also be in good judicial standing and have a 2.5 GPA.

Prior to Room Selection

  • Students who wish to live in the University Apartments must fill out the University Apartment Application before Feb. 1, 2017.
  • In the application, students must identify a Roommate Group for the entire apartment in order to be approved.

Room Selection

On Feb. 2, 2018, Students will be notified of their application status sent to their BGSU email. Students who have been selected to live in the University Apartments, will not follow the traditional room selection process outlined above. Instead...
