Returning Student Housing Guide

The Housing Selection Process is different when students are returning to BGSU compared to when they are new to campus. Returning students who are Guaranteed housing next year, meaning they have not lived on campus for two years should use this guide to help them along the way. We look forward to having our Falcons back on campus next year.

Important Dates

Dec. 3 – Feb. 13, 2019 | Housing Applications open at 9 a.m. and remain open through Feb. 13.

Feb. 20, 2019 | Housing Selection Times will be sent to BGSU emails after 3 p.m.

Feb. 25 – 28, 2019 | Students who paid the $200 housing payment select their room.*

BEFORE YOU START | Know Your Housing Status

Every student currently living on-campus received an email about their Housing Status for next academic school year. A student's status will either be Guaranteed -or- Not Guaranteed. Students who received an email stating they are Not Guaranteed, can find more information about their housing status here.

STEP 1 | Submit Required Documents – Required

Returning students must complete the following to select on-campus housing. Students will need to log into there MyBGSU "My Room and Meals" account and complete the following: MyBGSU>Students Tab>New Students>My Room and Meals

  1. Accept the terms of the On-Campus Housing and Dining Agreement.
  2. Make the $200 Initial Housing Payment.*
  3. Submit their Health and Emergency Contact Information.
  4. Complete the Lifestyle Questionnaire.
  5. Optional: Students who wish to apply to live in a learning community will be able to do so during this step.

* The $200 Initial Housing Payment does not determine the assigned Housing Selection Time for Returning Students. Selection times are randomized by a computer and not based on completed credit hours or payment date. Students who need financial assistance can contact the Office of Financial Aid to discuss housing deferral options.

STEP 2 | Determine which housing selection timeline you need to follow.

Choose the tab below based on the type of on-campus room you will be selecting. If you are not living in a learning community room or a Greek member wanting to live in the Greek Village, you will follow the steps under the Standard Housing Selection tab. From there, follow the housing selection timeline listed.

Standard Housing Selection Calendar

End of October

Eligibility Letters are sent. A letter will be sent via email to each student currently living on campus letting them know if they are eligible to sign up for on-campus housing for the next Academic School Year. The letter will also inform students about the next steps of the Housing Selection Process.

Dec. 3, 2018 - Feb. 13, 2019

Online Housing Applications open. Starting at 9 a.m. on Dec. 3, returning students who are eligible to live in on-campus housing can fill out the required online Housing Application and pay their $200 Initial Housing Payment through Feb. 13, 2019. This information is listed in Step 1 on this page. Students can also apply to live in All Gender Housing and a learning community during this time period.

Returning student housing selection times are RANDOMIZED?!?

The $200 Initial Housing Payment does not determine the assigned Housing Selection Time for returning students. Selection times are randomized by a computer and not based upon completed credit hours or payment date.

For returning students, assigning random selection times is the fairest process and here's why:

  • Admissions rewards future students who commit early to BGSU; by offering a chance to select housing before others who commit to the University later in the process. All returning students are already committed to BGSU so we cannot offer the same incentive.
  • The majority of returning students living on campus have a Sophomore status. The system would not be able to handle the volume, and we would not be able to assist students in a timely manner, if we gave all Sophomores the same selection time.
  • We found using GPA as a ranking in the housing selection process to be unfair. A student's class schedule, major and other variables outside of their control can help (or hinder) a student's GPA; making it impossible to compare one student to another. PLUS, this option could add additional stress on to the student.

Dec. 3, 2018 - Feb. 13, 2019

Room selection groups can be formed. Students can increase their chances to live with their preferred roommate(s) by joining a room selection group with up to six of their friends. Students in a group will receive the same selection time, making it easier to find a room together, or close together. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee students will be roommates, even if they are in a group.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Dec. 3, Returning students who are eligible to live on campus, and would like to receive the same selection time as their friends, can create/join room selection groups in their Housing Application located in their myBGSU My Room and Meals Account. Learn more about this process on the roommate webpage.

Roommate Selection Group Information

First, you should confirm your learning community allows you to pull-in roommates who are non-members. Once confirmed, after you select your community room, contact the Office of Residence Life and we will hand-assign your friend to your room. Please note: Your roommate will still need to confirm their room assignment during returning student housing selection (Feb. 25 – 28) if they are not a member of the learning community.

University Apartment Requests & Selection

Apartments with three single bedrooms will be available for the 2019-20 academic school year. The University Apartments are just what they sound like, they are apartments that BGSU manages and is considered an on-campus residence hall like all of the other options. All utilities, internet and BGTV is included in the housing payment, making it a more convenient option compared to off-campus apartments.

University-Apartments-Image-Cropped

This is the process to select a room in the University Apartments. The University Apartments will not be available through the standard housing selection because space is VERY limited for 2019-20 academic school year and we anticipate it to be a competitive process.

Unfortunately, even if a student follows the process below, there is no guarantee we will be able to place them in a University Apartment. Applicants will be notified before standard housing selection (Feb. 19 - 21) and should be prepared to select a room in a residence hall during that time.
