The Provost's Office is pleased to announce the
2017-18 Common Experience expands on the theme of “Persistence, Resilience and Grit.”
The University is encouraged to explore these concepts through the many Common Experience events and materials provided throughout the upcoming year.
This year’s Common Read is "Hillbilly Elegy," a memoir by J.D. Vance which looks deeply into his own struggles, the struggles of Appalachian Americans and the struggles of America’s working class, as seen in the life of an individual from Middletown, Ohio.
Thank you for your participation in making the Common Experience an integral part of the campus community.
by J.D. Vance
In "Hillbilly Elegy," J.D. Vance—a former marine who served in Iraq and who is a graduate of Ohio State and of Yale Law School—narrates his story of growing up in Middletown, Ohio, in a family with strong Appalachian roots.
From the book cover: “With piercing honesty, Vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history. A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, "Hillbilly Elegy" is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.”
