Being a scholar in the Sidney A. Ribeau President’s Leadership Academy has changed my life in such a positive way. PLA has been such a blessing for me; I cannot think of a program where you learn about yourself and others in the depth that I have in this program. I have formed so many different relationships with the people in my cohort and other scholars in the program. We refer to ourselves as a “PLAmily” because of the strong, family-like relationships we have with each other. I have learned more about what it means to be a leader in the past five months than I did throughout all of high school.
Since the beginning of my experience in the PLA, I have learned about the importance of diversity, especially in the leadership setting. I have also learned how to use my strengths in the most effective way in a group, as well as being aware of my weaknesses. The PLA has helped me understand that I am not always right and I don’t always have the greatest ideas. Being able to listen to different viewpoints and ideas is a quality I have developed since I have been in the PLA.
The PLA has helped me feel at home here at BGSU. The close relationships I have developed with other scholars and the staff in the Center for Leadership has helped me feel at home, while growing tremendously as a person. The staff builds a curriculum that has helped me adjust to the college lifestyle by working on my time management skills, helping me find what I am truly passionate about, and utilizing all the resources BGSU offers. I have found a group of people in the PLA to hold me accountable for my actions, as a student on and off campus, which is something I have realized is vital for my success as a BGSU student.
Since being a scholar in the PLA, I have had an unforgettable start to my 1st year as a BGSU student. I am so thankful for this opportunity I have been given to be in this program. I treasure the endless memories I have had with my PLAmily, including the meetings and projects we have done together. My experience has given me a different perspective on life, and I’m so grateful for that.
