Ethical Leadership Certificate
The Ethical Leadership Certificate (ELC), facilitated by the Student Leadership Assistants from the C. Raymond Marvin Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement is a program that helps you develop integrity and purpose as a leader. This certificate will help you develop self-awareness as an ethical and intentional leader by focusing on personal values, ethical decision-making, and making change in your society. The ELC incorporates foundational elements of the Social Change Model of Leadership and builds upon the Marvin Center’s values of integrity and purpose to support students in their efforts to become more ethical and informed leaders in their communities.
The Spring 2023 Ethical Leadership Certificate will be offered in a one-day format on Sunday, March 19 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. See below for a list of session topics.
One-Day ELC Schedule & Sessions
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Morning Session Topics
Leadership & Values
- Participants will work together to define leadership, ethics, and ethical leadership and explore why understanding one’s values is important for growing as an ethical leader.
Leading Authentically
- Participants will focus on building congruency of values and beliefs by comparing them to daily behaviors, actions, and priorities. Focusing on self-awareness, participants will reflect on how to utilize their strengths and talents.
Relational Leadership
- Participants will learn about the Relational Leadership Model. Through understanding purpose, ethics, empowerment, inclusion, and process, participants will apply the Relational Leadership Model to a student organization.

Ethical Decision-Making
- Participants will explore moral dilemmas and the "gray area" of decision-making. Participants will also discuss different ways of analyzing ethics.
Purposeful Community Engagement
- Participants will discuss purposeful engagement in one's community, focusing on ethical leadership within a group and as a member of larger communities and societies. Participants will be challenged to move past the "I" framework toward a "we" framework.
Leading with your "Why"
- Participants will refelct on their aspirations and dreams, goals, and what they are passionate about. In doing so, participants will apply material from previous discussions and leadership theories to determine their "why" and how they can create a plan for being an ethical leader.
