BGSU unveils new public calendar tool, Localist
In August of 2018 the Office of Marketing & Communications and Information Technology Services (ITS) implemented Localist as the engine behind BGSU’s public calendar (https://events.bgsu.edu). This transition was a welcomed change as we were operating on an aged version of Bedework, an open source calendar from the Apereo Foundation. Over the years the calendar system had become dated, and we were pouring more and more time into supporting it – something we did not have in abundance! When investigating an upgrade to the current tool, we determined it was the right time to research other available products on the market.
After evaluating a handful of options we found that Localist was the best fit for BGSU. Localist is a cloud-based product that comes with a variety of exciting features like the ability to “follow” locations and groups a filter by different types of events. It also includes social media tie-ins that allow you to see whom in your connections is interested in an event you might be looking at. Localist serves both the BGSU community and the public by permitting anyone to view and/or submit events. Localist also easily integrates into the BGSU website so we can share upcoming events on our homepage and other sites on the Web.
In addition to the above, Localist provides a great administrative platform that makes it easy to review and approve events, and to curate events to make sure the right events are “featured”. It also provides built-in analytics so we can see which events are trending and being shared via social media. This tool really puts the power of event management back in the hands of the Marketing & Communications team.
