    For a half-century, BGSU and the University of Salzburg have had a partnership. Nearly 1,500 students have benefitted from the Academic Year Abroad exchange program between the two universities. In June, some 70 of those Salzburg program alumni and others affiliated with the programs gathered in Salzburg to celebrate the milestone.

    Matheus Peraci never imagined how much Sigma Phi Epsilon would impact his life when he first arrived at BGSU. An international student from Brazil, he didn’t realize what being part of Greek Life meant besides the stereotypes that he had seen in movies. That all changed when he visited Greece.

    Bowling Green State University has a tradition of preparing students to be global citizens. The Academic Year Abroad Program in Salzburg recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and new connections were made to expand the Global Internship Program in Europe.

    Bowling Green State University individualized studies student Cole Highhouse spent the spring semester on an exchange program at Hong Kong Baptist University. Highhouse said the experience gave him a unique perspective on values held outside of the United States that will set him apart from others in his future career.

    A group of Tourism, Leisure and Event Planning students from BGSU visited Beijing. Not only were the students able to experience landmarks such as the Temple of Heaven and Great Wall of China, but also learned calligraphy, sat in on an event planning class and took a traditional tea class.

    Usually the only sharks or elephants that students encounter during their time at Bowling Green State University are the opposing teams’ mascots at sporting events. Not so for junior Allie Laber, who spent the fall semester at sea during one of the many study abroad programs the University offers students.

    College Student Personnel graduate student Ayanna Byers gained a deeper understanding of her identity and of helping others during an internship at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. The experience has helped her as a SMART mentor at Bowling Green State University.

    BGSU students have been expanding their knowledge and perspectives with studies around the globe. On Wednesday (Oct. 5), more than 20 of them will present short talks about their experiences at the annual “Embracing Global Engagement: Internships, Service- and Experiential Learning in BGSU Education Abroad Programs."

    Stacey Dickerson is anxiously awaiting her last semester to begin at BGSU. Instead of beginning classes on campus, she’ll be studying abroad in Spain for a second time. Studying overseas is not an easy decision to make, but being in the Spanish learning community, La Comunidad, has helped her to better prepare.
