RFP for Faculty Travel Funds

Purpose

To expand the number of opportunities for BGSU students during Winter Session, International Programs and Partnerships invites faculty to submit proposals to receive funds to visit prospective locations abroad with the intent of developing new programs for January 2021.  Preference will be given to faculty new to BGSU in the last three years who have not previously taught students abroad.

Information on Education Abroad programs for the 2019 Winter Session and Travel Funds for the 2020 Winter Session

2019 Winter Session

A total of seven faculty-led programs are scheduled to be offered during BGSU’s first Winter Session in January 2019. Faculty will be leading BGSU students on education abroad programs to the following locations:

  • Peru (Lima, Cuzco, Junin, Nazga, Arequipa, Barranco, and Aguas Calientes)
  • New Zealand (Christchurch, Dunedin, Franz Josef, Kaikoura, Nelson, Picton, Wanaka, and Wellington)
  • Spain (Oviedo and Madrid)
  • Spain (Alcala de Henares, Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville)
  • Australia (Brisbane, Cairns, and Gold Coast)
  • China  (Beijing, Changsha and Zhagjiajie)
  • Netherlands Antilles (Curaçao)

2020 Winter Session

In April 2018, travel funds were awarded to five faculty members interested in exploring locations for programs being developed for Winter Session 2020.  One faculty member received funds to finalize plans for a proposal submitted for Winter Session 2019. Program directors travelled in summer 2018 to explore the following program locations:

  • Austria and Czech Republic (Vienna, Neusiedl am See, and Prague)
  • Greece (Athens, Delphi, and Peloponnese)
  • Morocco (Essaouira and Fez)
  • Puerto Rico (San Juan , Loíza, Ponce, Fajardo, Santurce, Río Piedras, Carolina, Vieques/Culebra, Cataño, Arecibo, Guavate, Cayey, Adjuntas, Guayama, Caguas (Turabo), Ballamón, Utuado, and Jayuya)    
  • Costa Rica (Puntarenas)
  • Peru  (Lima, Cuzco, Junin, Nazga, Arequipa, Barranco, and Aguas Calientes)

2021 Winter Session Travel Funds Application Deadline

To meet the Education Abroad 2021 faculty-led Winter Session proposal deadline of November 1, 2019, applicants for the travel funds must submit their requests by March 1st, 2019. Awards will be announced on April 1, 2019.

Application

Applicants are requested to fill out and submit the Prospective Funding Application form available online.

Selection Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria as demonstrated in the Prospective Funding Application form:

  • Travel that will result in programs that have the potential for robust enrollment (e.g. by reaching out to students across disciplines through BGP classes)
  • Travel that will result in programs focused on cultural diversity
  • Travel to locations that are preferably new to BGSU faculty-led programs or to an existing Education Abroad location that will attract a new population of students
  • Travel to destinations that are safe for students and faculty
  • Travel to develop programs that are affordable to BGSU students

A reviewing committee led by International Programs and Partnerships and Online and Summer Academic Programs will select proposals for funding for 2021 programs. Exploratory travel is to occur between May and August 2019, in order to meet the faculty-led Winter 2021 program submission deadline of November 1st, 2019.
