BGSU’s Institutional Transformation project is Building Bridges: Creating Connections for the Next Generation of Faculty Leaders

We are developing a supportive network of current and future faculty leaders to advance the careers of post-tenure faculty and create a cohort of institutional change agents. Our project will support mid-career women STEM faculty’s professional development and career advancement while creating a stronger culture of faculty leadership at BGSU. Planned activities include:

Y1: Focus is on starting the conversation and building the foundation for change. We will (a) conduct an environmental scan (the "foundation") to identify extant professional development (PD) opportunities, (b) engage faculty and administrators in discussions about faculty PD topics like mentoring, the tenure and promotion process, and university policies, (c) collect information on personal theories of leadership and faculty perceptions of leadership and mentoring, and (d) develop our leadership curriculum.

Y2: Focus is on building bridges between faculty and university administrators. We will (a) offer leadership training for mid-career faculty in order to support women STEM faculty’s career advancement, (b) pilot a leadership mentoring program that connects mid-career faculty with university leaders, and (c) measure the short-term efficacy of these programs.

Y3: Focus is on opening the bridges for faculty to take on leadership roles. We will (a) train mid-career faculty to be institutional change agents and effective advocates for gender equity at BGSU, (b) create a sustainable model for future leadership development opportunities, and (c) complete a post-intervention assessment.

Our ultimate goals are to have:

  • More women faculty being promoted to full professor.
  • More women faculty in leadership roles (chairs/directors, associate deans, deans, associate provosts, shared governance).
  • More leaders on campus advocating for gender equity.
  • More sustained, intentional professional development opportunities for BGSU faculty.
