Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Masters degree, students in the School Counseling program are expected to be able to:

  • Distinguish between counseling theories
  • Integrate theory and practice for individual and group counseling settings 
  • Examine practices surrounding multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion, and equity
  • Develop a professional counselor identity with a foundation in the integration of evidenced based practice and applicable ethical codes
  • Evaluate their self-awareness and self-development through reflective practice of counseling skills

Prerequisites to Graduate Work
Prerequisites for the M.Ed. program includes a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Applicants seeking admission to the graduate program in School Counseling should follow the instructions outlined in the Graduate Admission webpage. Applicants should also review the website listed above and/or contact the School of Counseling and Special Education for additional admission materials and requirements.

Degree Requirements
The Master of Education in School Counseling curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students wishing to pursue school counselor positions in elementary, middle, or secondary schools. Students who complete this coursework will satisfy academic requirements for K-12 school counselor licensure (Pupil Services) in the state of Ohio. Students seeking state licensure must also successfully complete the required Ohio Assessment for Educators exam. Students are required to take a minimum of 60 credit hours for graduation.
