Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master's degree, students in the Cross-Cultural and International Education program are expected to be able to:

• Demonstrate the skills necessary for international/cross-cultural educational research.
• Relate academic learning to authentic problems and apply conceptually based models to real-life settings and challenges
• Research and analyze issues of cultural and international understanding with educational theory and practice in local, national or international settings
• Construct conceptual models of the relationship between education and global challenges/problems  

Prerequisites to Graduate Work
Applicants for the master’s program in Cross-Cultural & International Education have earned a bachelor’s degree and fulfill all other requirements for admission (see below).

Admission Procedure
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate programs in MACIE should follow the instructions outlined in the Graduate Admission webpage, including the online application to the Graduate College.  

Applicants for the MACIE program must submit the following items with the online application:

• Application Essay of no more than 1000 words that includes:
  •    Your reasons for wanting to join the MACIE Program;
  • How your background experiences have prepared you for the Program; and
  • Your career goals.
• A current Resume or Curriculum Vita.
• Three (3) Letters of Recommendation.  We strongly suggest that at least one  recommendation from an academic reference and one that is related to your professional work. 
• Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) OR an Additional Writing Sample with an Interview with Program Faculty
• International Students are required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores, unless English is your first language, or you were educated in English-medium schools (See the Graduate College  policies in this catalog pertaining to TOEFL submission.
• Optional: Graduate Assistantship Application. All applicants interested in graduate assistantships from BGSU should fill out this form, including Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. Application available on program web site.
• Optional: Applicants from the US Peace Corps should also upload their Description of Service (DOS) with the application to be considered for the Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program, and to waive the BGSU Graduate College application fee.

Degree Requirements
MACIE prepares professional educators to be effective leaders in the internationalization of schools and communities and to be positive facilitators of cross-cultural understanding. The focus of this degree program is to prepare global educators who are able to lead in internationalizing curriculum, foster international educational partnerships, and infuse education policy and practice with cross-cultural awareness. We define cross-cultural and international education as the examination of education from diverse perspectives in international, transnational, and global contexts.

The MACIE program requires students to complete the following requirements:

• Core Educational Component (12 credit hours of coursework in Educational Foundations and Inquiry)
• Interdisciplinary Cognate Component (9 credit hours).  All students must complete a minor, or "cognate" of a minimum of nine graduate credit hours. The cognate consists of courses from the College of Arts and Sciences or other Colleges across campus that focus on topics related to a particular international or cross-cultural theme.
• Language Acquisition Component.  Students may complete this requirement in a number of ways, including with previously earned credit or examination. Please see the program web site for more information.
• Research and Inquiry Component (6 credit hours).
• Cross-Cultural/International Internship (3 credit hours minimum).  Students will spend a minimum of 120 contact hours at the field site and 15 academic contact hours.
• Master’s Capstone Component. Students will choose one of two options:
  • Option I: MA Thesis (3 credit hours minimum). Enrollment hours may exceed three (3) credits but no more than 3 hours creditable toward degree.
  • Option II: Comprehensive Examination or Applied Project. Within Option II, students may elect to either write a comprehensive examination or undertake an applied project. Students must be enrolled in at least one (1) credit hour at the University when taking the comprehensive exam.
