Accommodations for students with disabilities
By: Kat Nic, Doctoral Assistant, Office of Accessibility Services
The mission of Accessibility Services at Bowling Green State University is to provide equal access and opportunity to qualified students, faculty and staff with disabilities. Our goal is to increase awareness of disability issues and support the success of students with disabilities by providing opportunities for full integration into the BGSU community.
Families should encourage their students to register with our office as quickly as possible. To apply for accessibility services, students must submit documentation of their disability for review by our staff. There is no deadline to apply for services, but students should be advised that the review process can take several weeks. For academic accommodations, more information can be found on the Accessibility Services website.
Services we Provide
Housing Accommodations: For housing accommodations, Accessibility Services and the Office of Residence Life work together to coordinate housing accommodations for students with disabilities and chronic health conditions. Students need to complete the housing accommodation form to submit their requests.
Dining Accommodations: For dining accommodations, Accessibility Services and Dining Services work together to coordinate accommodations for students with food allergies and medically required diets. Please visit the Dining Services website to connect with our campus dietitian and self-identify with your food allergies.
Course Instruction Accommodations: Students who need to make a course instruction accommodation request for one or more of their classes next fall due to a disability, should connect with our office as soon as possible. Descriptions on how courses will be taught can be found on the BGSU Class Registration Checklist.
Ohio Colleges2Careers: A good resource for students in our office is the partnership with Ohio Colleges2Careers, a partnership between Ohio’s state college and university system, the Ohio Department of Higher Education, Ohio businesses and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). This is a program that offers support for students with disabilities as they prepare for their careers.
Depending on a student’s disability-related needs or goals, the program may include career exploration and counseling, resume and interview preparation, assistive technology, and assistance finding internships and permanent employment.
Here at BGSU, Jennifer Murray Cosgrove is the Ohio College2Careers counselor. Jennifer’s office is at 38 College Park Office Building with the Office of Accessibility Services. She can be reached at email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org or 419-277-6754. To apply for services, meet with Jennifer or go online to begin the referral process at OODWorks.com.
For any accommodation-related or disability-related questions, please contact our office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT Monday-Friday at email@example.com or 419-372-8495, and someone from our office will get back to you.
We are scheduling phone or Zoom appointments through the summer. Once your student has applied for accommodations, they should check their BGSU email account regularly. All updates will be sent to that email address.
