Professional Year Overview By Program Area

The Office of Educator Preparation and Partnerships partners with districts within a 70 mile radius for all methods placements and student teaching internships. 

ADOLESCENCE TO YOUNG ADULT EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in Adolescence to Young Adult Education complete their methods placement and student teaching internship in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Teacher candidates are placed in grades 7-12 and teach in the content area in which they will be licensed. Current content area choices include Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Language Arts, Single Field Science (Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences-Chemistry, and Physical Sciences-Physics), Dual Field Sciences (Physical Sciences-Chemistry and Physics, Earth Sciences and Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics, Life Sciences and Chemistry, Life Sciences and Physics, and Life Sciences and Earth Sciences), and Integrated Science.  The student teaching internship is a full-time, fourteen week experience.

ART EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in Visual Arts Education complete two consecutive student teaching internships in area schools. Each experience is seven weeks in duration.  Internships are typically completed at both the elementary and junior/senior high school levels. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Educator Preparation and Partnerships upon recommendation of program faculty.

INCLUSIVE-EARLY CHILDHOOD

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in Inclusive-Early Childhood complete two years of methods and student teaching internships.  The Junior year of methods and student teaching internship is completed in a preschool.  The Senior year placement is in an elementary school classroom in grades Kindergarten-3rd grade.  Teacher Candidates will have experience in both general education and special education settings.  The student teaching internship is a full-time, fourteen (14) week experience.

INTERVENTION SPECIALIST/SPECIAL EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU as Intervention Specialists complete their methods placement and student teaching internship over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience.  The Office of Educator Preparation and Partnerships and Graduate Program Coordinator work together to arrange internship placements.  The student teaching internship is a full-time, fourteen (14) week experience.

MIDDLE CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursing licensure at BGSU in Middle Childhood Education complete their methods placement and student teaching internship in the same classroom(s) over two consecutive semesters as the professional year experience. Teacher Candidates are placed in grades 4-9 and teach students in two content area concentrations in which they will be licensed. Concentrations include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Student teaching is a full-time, fourteen (14) week experience.

MUSIC EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in Music Education complete their choral, general music or instrumental student teaching internship in an area school over a 14 week period.  Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Educator Preparation and Partnerships upon recommendation of program faculty.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in Physical Education/Health Education complete two seven week student teaching internships in area schools. Teacher Candidates generally complete internships at both the elementary and junior/senior high school levels. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Educator Preparation and Partnerships upon recommendation of program faculty.

WORKFORCE EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in Business Education, Marketing Education, or Family Consumer Sciences  complete their methods placement and student teaching internship in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters for a professional year experience. Methods experiences are completed in the fall and student teaching internship is completed in the spring semester only. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Educator Preparation and Partnerships upon recommendation by program faculty.  The student teaching internship is a full fourteen (14) week semester.

WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Teacher Candidates pursuing licensure at BGSU in World Language Education complete their methods placement and student teaching internship in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Teacher candidates are usually placed in a junior or senior high school to work with an experienced educator and learners in the target language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, or Spanish.). The student teaching internship is a full-time, fourteen (14) week experience.
