Professional Year Field Experience Descriptions

The Office of Field Experiences partners with districts within a 70 mile radius to make placements for all methods and student teaching candidates. 

ADOLESCENCE TO YOUNG ADULT EDUCATION

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Adolescence to Young Adult Education complete their methods and student teaching placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Students are placed in grades 7-12 and teach students in the content area in which they will be licensed. Current content area choices include Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Language Arts, Single Field Science (Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences-Chemistry, and Physical Sciences-Physics), Dual Field Sciences (Physical Sciences-Chemistry and Physics, Earth Sciences and Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics, Life Sciences and Chemistry, Life Sciences and Physics, and Life Sciences and Earth Sciences), and Integrated Science.  Student teaching is a full-time, seventeen week experience.

ART EDUCATION

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Visual Arts Education complete two consecutive student teaching placements in area schools. Each experience last eight weeks and they are usually completed at both the elementary and junior/senior high school levels. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.

INCLUSIVE-EARLY CHILDHOOD

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Inclusive-Early Childhood complete two years of methods and student teaching.  The Junior year of methods and student teaching is completed in a preschool.  The Senior year placement is in an elementary school classroom in grades Kindergarten-3rd grade.  Students will have experience in both general education and special education settings.  Student teaching is a full-time, seventeen week experience.

INTERVENTION SPECIALIST/SPECIAL EDUCATION

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU as Intervention Specialists complete their methods and student teaching placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience.  The Office of Field Experiences and Graduate Program Coordinator work together to arrange student teaching placements.  Student teaching is a full-time, seventeen week experience.

MIDDLE CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Students pursing licensure at BGSU in Middle Childhood Education complete their methods and student teaching placements in the same classroom(s) over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Students are placed in grades 4-9 and teach students in two content-area concentrations in which they will be licensed. Concentrations include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Student teaching is a full-time, seventeen-week experience.

MUSIC EDUCATION

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Music Education complete their choral, general music or instrumental student teaching placements in an area school over a 15-week period.  Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH EDUCATION

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Physical Education/Health Education complete their student teaching placements complete two consecutive student teaching placements in area schools. Each experience last eight weeks and they are usually completed at both the elementary and junior/senior high school levels. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation of program faculty.

WORKFORCE EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in Business Education,  Marketing Education, or Family Consumer Sciences  complete their methods and student teaching placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters for a professional year experience. Methods experiences are completed in the fall and student teaching experiences are completed in the spring semester only. Placement arrangements are made through the Office of Field Experiences upon recommendation by program faculty.  Student teaching experiences last sixteen weeks.

WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Students pursuing licensure at BGSU in World Language Education complete their methods and student teaching placements in the same classroom over two consecutive semesters as part of the professional year experience. Students are usually placed in a junior or senior high school to work with an experienced educator and learners in the target language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, or Spanish.). Student teaching is a full-time, seventeen-week experience.
