The focus of my research is human kinematic optimization and movement recognition.  The products of this line of inquiry are intended to improve sport and motor skill performance as well as to augment standoff movement recognition capabilities for military and criminal justice applications.  Many of my current research efforts stem from past projects centered on human gait recognition.

Dr. Travis Heggie is a specialist in Travel and Wilderness Medicine. His current research emphasis is focused on the health, safety, and legal aspects of the travel, tourism, outdoor recreation, and hospitality industries. The former Public Risk Management Specialist & Tort Claims Officer for the U.S. National Park Service, Dr. Heggie has been an Editorial Board Member of the highly ranked research journal Travel Medicine & Infectious Disease since 2009. He is also a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Travel Medicine and the International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health.  Over the years Dr. Heggie has served as the Director of the Great Plains Injury Prevention Research Center and as an adjunct Associate Research Professor with the College of Public Health, Medical, and Rehabilitation Sciences at James Cook University, Australia. In 2018, Dr. Heggie was honored as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (Faculty of Travel Medicine).

Current Research Projects:
The prevalence of high altitude pulmonary (HAPE) and cerebral edema (HACE) amongst climbers on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa. (in collaboration with the RWTH Aachen University Faculty of Medicine, Germany).

Injury and disease prevention at high end tourist resorts: it’s more than just bed bugs.

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) and the distribution of Naegleria fowleri in North America, Australia, and Africa.

Health hazards facing geotourists in volcanic and geothermal environments.
