Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement (ECE 4/5)

The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement for Grades 4 and 5 is for teachers with an Early Childhood Education (PreK-3) license or teacher candidates enrolled in coursework to earn an ECE license. The endorsement allows Early Childhood Education teachers to add grades 4 and 5 to an ECE license. The admission requirements for the courses include:

  • Current ECE license-holders must provide a copy of their valid teaching license
  • Current undergraduate teacher candidates must pass Block II methods courses with a C or higher before taking Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement classes.

The ECE endorsement consists of five classes (15 credit hours). The courses may be taken at the undergraduate or the graduate level. For those taking the courses at the graduate level, a BGSU Certificate may be earned through the Graduate College.

Core Courses (15 hours)

Summer, Fall,Spring. An in-depth study of social studies instruction for teaching in the 4th and 5th grades, including curriculum, materials, methodologies, assessment tools and interventions. Prerequisites: Early Childhood Education or Middle Childhood Education Ohio teaching license,or equivalent. Approved for Distance Learning.

Summer. An in-depth study of math for teaching in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades, including curriculum, materials, methodologies, assessment tools and interventions. Prerequisites: An Early Childhood Education or Middle Childhood Education Ohio teaching license, or equivalent. Approved for Distance Education.

Summer. A systematic examination of trends and issues affecting a contemporary program of elementary school science. Attention is focused on methods, objectives and materials as applied to individualized diagnostic and prescriptive instruction. Prerequisites: Early Childhood Education or Middle Childhood Education Ohio teaching license, or equivalent. Approved for Distance Learning.

Summer. An in-depth study of reading-language arts for teaching in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades, including curriculum, materials, methodologies, assessment tools and interventions. Prerequisites: An Early Childhood Education or Middle Childhood Education Ohio teaching license, or equivalent. Approved for Distance Learning.

Summer. This class emphasizes ages and stages of children’s growth and development between the ages of 8 and 12. Learning approaches, classroom management strategies and the middle school philosophy are examined. Prerequisites: An Early Childhood Education or Middle Childhood Education Ohio teaching license or equivalent. Approved for Distance Education.

Once course requirements are complete, candidates will need to submit the following to the EDHD Office of Accreditation and Licensure:

  • An Ohio Department of Education Licensure Application
  • Associated fees
  • An official transcript of final grades
  • An official Praxis II score report confirming passage of the 0014 exam
