Our Community
Why We're Here:
The fraternity/sorority community at BGSU aims to develop responsible citizens who are dedicated to lifelong membership and community involvement through our commitment to academic excellence, positive relationships, civic engagement, and leadership.
Translation... We are values-based organizations that are here to help our members and the communities for which we are a part become better. This isn't just a college thing, joining a fraternity or sorority is a lifelong commitment.
Who We Are:
BGSU's Fraternity & Sorority community is comprised of nearly 40 chapters of inter/national fraternities and sororities. These chapters are governed by student led boards called councils. At BGSU, we have four different councils that provide governance, accountability, educational opportunities, and structure for our chapters: the Panhellenic Council (PHC), Interfraternity Council (IFC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC or sometimes referred to as the Divine Nine), and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC).
What We Do:
Although each chapter offers a unique experience, students who join a fraternity or sorority can expect to participate in similar experiences that contribute to a well-rounded, fun, and enriching BGSU experience:
- Build Leaders
- Students are offered countless opportunities to develop leadership skills within and outside the chapter through workshops, retreats, and seminars.
- Every chapter has executive officers and positions that provide members the opportunity to put their leadership skills to the test.
- Members are encouraged to join and take on leadership roles in other student organizations.
- Serve Others
- Most fraternities and sororities have a national cause that they support (AKA Philanthropy) by raising funds and awareness throughout the year.
- Members are encouraged to perform community service within the BGSU and local community throughout their experience.
- Be Successful
- The first goal of any BGSU student should be to graduate, so it is our job to not only ensure that students do graduate, but that they exceed minimum academic standards. Through scholarship support, group study sessions, and mentoring, members are given endless resources for academic success.
- Since our groups are all part of inter/national organizations, members are instantly connected to networks of people throughout the U.S. and beyond who share their fraternal experience.
- With hands on experience in event planning, leading others, public speaking, communication, among countless others, fraternity and sorority members are well equipped to go out into the work force.
- Have Fun!
- Students make friendships that last a lifetime within their fraternity/sorority experience by becoming a part of a sisterhood or brotherhood.
- Whether it's playing on the chapter intramural team, competing in Greek Weekend relay events, performing in Greek Sing, or having a movie night in the chapter house, there is always an element of fun within fraternities and sororities.
