Applauding Excellence Individual and Organizational Awards

This award is designed to honor outstanding students who provided service to the Bowling Green and/or University community through volunteerism, employment, as well as those individuals who have made significant strides in bettering the quality of life at the University and/or Bowling Green community. Grade point average will also be a consideration in determining recipients.

Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges is a nationwide recognition program for students who have demonstrated outstanding scholastic and community achievements. Students who are selected may be eligible to apply for one (1) of three (3) national H. Pettus Randall III scholarships, worth $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 each. A detailed summary of all involvement and accomplishments is required for application.

The President’s Award for Distinguished Service is awarded to graduating and recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students who have fully demonstrated what it means to be a Falcon. These students are well-rounded individuals who have made significant contributions to BGSU and have multiple involvements within the University and Bowling Green communities. Furthermore, applicants have strived for high academic rigor, earning at least a 3.0 GPA.

Every student at Bowling Green State University has the opportunity to apply for the Student Life Award. Successful recipients must demonstrate leadership within the University community through formal and informal leadership roles in organizations and activities. These students have greatly contributed to the University community through various projects and activities that enhance campus life.

Division of Student Affairs Individual Scholarships and Financial Awards

For most of the following scholarships and awards, applicants must complete a General Application through Academic Works. Please follow these steps to access the General Application page:

  1. Log on to MyBGSU
  2. Under the Students tab, click “Financials”
  3. Select the “Scholarship Opportunities” option at the top of the Financials page
  4. This will open a new tab where you will be instructed to complete the General Application in order to be considered for these and other BGSU scholarships.

You can also click on each link to the scholarships/awards listed below, and you will be taken to Academic Works. Note, if you have not completed the General Application you will be instructed to do so before you can be considered for the scholarship.

The Ray Marvin Leadership Awards recognize students for their leadership development and contributions from May 2016 to May 2017. To be eligible for a Ray Marvin Leadership Award, individuals must have been undergraduate students for fall 2016 and spring 2017, as well as demonstrate a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

Award Amount: $2,000

The Brent E. Vogel Leadership Scholarship recognizes the legacy of Brent Edward Vogel. A smart, hard-working, passionate and strong individual, Brent lived his life as a leader who inspired people through action. It is his family's desire that his legacy live on through BGSU student recipients of the Brent E. Vogel

The Hazel H. Smith Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving full-time, off-campus or commuting student. The scholarship is awarded in the memory of Hazel H. Smith, a pioneer and champion of off-campus and commuter student services. As such, the ideal recipient will embody Hazel's commitment to the off-campus and commuter student experience.

The Kathy Hawk Nicosia Leadership Award honors a rising junior or senior student each year whose concern for others at Bowling Green State University is exemplified by the characteristics of recognizable leadership, academic achievement, admirable personal qualities, as well as dedication to BGSU and the benefits derived from participating in leadership opportunities.

Scholarship Amount: $1,000

Mike and Sara Kuhlin, Falcon Flames, wanted to recognize exceptional student leadership. This scholarship program they established was initially created as a planned gift, and then launched after Sara’s passing in 2013. Their time on campus – as students and administrators – prompted them to want to recognize and reward students who have demonstrated continued and increased involvement in campus activities and/or community service.

Scholarship Amount: Two (2) students will receive $3,750 each

Richard A. Lenhart was a University administrator who spent more than 25 years working in student activities and programming before his death in 1984. At the time of his death, Lenhart was the associate dean of students and responsible for coordinating the activities of almost every student organization on campus. At the time of his death, he was the only person to have won USG's William T. Jerome Award twice.

The Strength in Sisterhood Scholarship was established to recognize Rebekah Blakkolb, Christina Goyett, and Sarah Hammond, students at Bowling Green State University who were killed in a tragic traffic accident on March 2, 2012. All three were students in the College of Education and Human Development and members of Alpha Xi Delta Women's Fraternity. The scholarship also recognizes Kayla Somoles and Angelica J. Mormile who were critically injured in the accident.

Scholarship Amount: $500

The Student Affairs Advocates Board Scholarship rewards exemplary leadership and academic excellence. An initial monetary gift by Don E. Cook and Sharon S. Cook created this scholarship, and then members of the Student Affairs Leadership Council provided additional monetary gifts to the fund.

Scholarship Amount: $500 to one male and $500 to one female

When the late Gerald Saddlemire, Professor Emeritus of College Student Personnel, retired on January 1, 1990, a scholarship was established to acknowledge his professional career accomplishments. A former Dean of Students within the State University of New York, Dr. Saddlemire was appointed chair of the College Student Personnel Department of Bowling Green State University on June 1, 1969. Dr. Saddlemire also served as Interim Dean of the College of Education and Allied Professionals at BGSU.

Scholarship Amount: $1,200

Smith Scholarship honors two students each year whose concern for others in the Greek system is exemplified by characteristics of recognizable leadership, academic achievement, admirable personal qualities, dedication to the University and its Greek system, and the benefits derived from fraternity or sorority membership.

Scholarship Amount: $1,000 to one fraternity man and $1,000 to one sorority woman
