The Rogers Report

My first month as president has already taught me so much. Every day, I am reminded of how talented and motivated our students are, inside and out of the classroom. We have faculty and staff who are dedicated to ensuring a world-class educational experience for all Falcons. Throughout March, I have enjoyed meeting some of our 175,000 alumni who all have stories of how BGSU has had a lasting impact on their lives.

BGSU is a public institution, and we have a special obligation to serve the public interest and create public good. In the weeks and months ahead, you will learn more about our commitment to meet society's needs by graduating the next generation of leaders, creating and growing academic programs that can shape tomorrow and executing opportunities to improve our premier learning community where Falcons Belong. Stand Out. Go Far.

Enjoy some of my favorite stories from this past month and learn about a few important updates to get involved and support BGSU!

Regards,

Rodney K. Rogers, Ph.D. '81
President
Bowling Green State University

In pursuit of public service: BGSU’s Hannah Finnerty is a Truman Scholarship finalist

In pursuit of public service: BGSU's Hannah Finnerty is a Truman Scholarship finalist
I met Hannah Finnerty during her first year at BGSU. Anyone who knows her can attest to her love for BGSU, from her academic excellence in journalism to her involvement with the Center for Community and Civic Engagement, the BG News and the Alumni Laureate Scholarship program. Last summer, she worked with refugees in Egypt and Greece, thanks to the Stuart R. Givens Memorial Fellowship. She is an outstanding student leader who has a sound commitment to public service, which has led her to being named a finalist for the prestigious Truman Scholarship.

BGSU contributions inform decision to designate Lake Erie impaired

BGSU contributions inform decision to designate Lake Erie impaired
This month, Ohio's Environmental Protection Agency and Gov. John Kasich designtated the western basin of Lake Erie an impaired waterway due to toxic algae. This is a critical issue facing our region, and faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences are at the forefront with their research. Drs. George Bullerjahn, Timothy Davis and Michael McKay teamed up with the EPA to develop the criteria used for this designation. This is an example of how BGSU faculty not only educate our students, but are pioneers in their disciplines.

From the backyard to Super Bowl LII for BGSU alumnus
Six years after graduating from BGSU, Ryan Maddocks '12, video assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles, held the Vince Lombardi Trophy in his hands. Ryan majored in telecommunications and volunteered for the BGSU football program to gain experience. After internships, he found himself working for a top-tier NFL team, and this year, his employers call themselves Super Bowl champions! Ryan's story reminds me of the critical role BGSU plays in preparing students to go far in their careers, and our work is never done.
