The beginning of the academic year is one of my favorite times. I love everything about it – the new (mostly empty) planners, the freshly sharpened pencils, the pens that still have their caps, the anticipation of learning, and meeting new friends. (Yes, for those of you who are thinking it, I am a geek.) Some of you may be starting your own academic year as teachers, parents or even students. For others, the academic year may barely register beyond the advertisements for school supplies.

This fall, our college welcomed almost 900 undergraduate and graduate students to the Falcon Family. As part of our new tradition, all of these new students were invited to ring the bell at the Little Red Schoolhouse. I hope that the BGSU alumni reading this will take a moment to remember the first time you walked onto campus as a Falcon. I remember that moment clearly, and can see in retrospect the incredible impact that being a Falcon has had on my life.

I invite you to revisit your own Falcon memories at this fall's events. While maybe not as exciting as your very first day as a Falcon, I can almost guarantee that you'll have a chance to meet new friends. . . and I'll bring the freshly sharpened pencils!
