A message from the Dean
The faculty and staff of the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering wish all our students, alumni and friends a very Happy New Year! There have been several great developments, adding strength to and creating a very positive outlook for our growing college and academic programs, as we collectively herald a momentous new year that marks the golden jubilee of our Cooperative Education Program.

It was in 1968 that the college had established its hallmark Cooperative Education Program. The importance of such integration of co-ops into our curricula has been recognized by the State of Ohio when the college was awarded $375,000 each year in scholarship funds to support recruitment of qualified Ohio students whom we prepare to enter the workforce through our co-op program. The college takes pride in transforming today’s students into tomorrow’s professionals, with a strong emphasis on technological careers. A hands-on instructional approach and lab-intensive education are supplemented by career-related experiences to our students, even as students progress through their degree programs. All undergraduate degree programs in the college are distinguished by the fact that students gain real-world experiences even before they graduate. Every undergraduate degree program currently requires at least one, and up to three co-ops. Students work at companies ranging from small businesses to global, multi-billion dollar corporations, and locations next door to many time zones away, with exposure to other languages and cultures, as well. Our students have been doing that for half a century, accumulating several million hours (and thousands of work years) of real-world experience collectively – and many hundreds of our alumni are in leadership positions in the industry, making the college very proud! We hope to see many of the alumni at various events throughout 2018.

An exciting new development is that the School of the Built Environment was approved by the BGSU Board of Trustees in October. The school will bring the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design and the Department of Construction Management together so significant synergies can be realized. A School of the Built Environment is unique in the state of Ohio, and indeed a rare entity throughout the world. Our faculty and advisory boards believe that the school will benefit our students by reflecting the close relationship among the designers and builders in the industry. Dr. Arsenio Rodrigues, who is a registered architect, is coming to BGSU as the founding director of the School of the Built Environment. Within the school, Dr. Robert Austin will serve as the chair of construction management and Dr. Andreas Luescher as the interim chair of architecture and environmental design. Dr. Wil Roudebush’s service as interim chair for both construction management and architecture and environmental design over the past few years is appreciated.

I am also happy to announce that, after internal searches, Dr. Todd Waggoner has been selected associate dean for Undergraduate Affairs and Accreditation, and Dr. Sudershan Jetley has been selected associate dean for Graduate Affairs, Research and Administration effective the beginning of 2018. Many of our readers have been familiar with them since they previously held the same positions on an interim basis.

We would love to hear from you. Please contact us or join us on social media, whether you would like to share some good news about yourself, have a suggestion to help us serve students better, help us in our quest for continuous improvement or about this newsletter. Also, please stay in touch and keep us informed of any changes in your email or address, so we can remain in touch. Once again, we send you wishes for a great new year!
