This week's essential health and wellness information from BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey

Watch BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey's March 16 Video Update on How to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day Safely
In this week’s COVID-19 dashboard, we are reporting an increase in cases compared to last week’s reporting period, as outlined in this email and on the Forward Falcons website. While cases remain at a manageable level, our increase reflects trends we are seeing in our county as well. We are close to being on the other side of this global pandemic, but need to continue to do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19 while vaccination efforts increase. Wear a face covering, keep 6 feet of physical distance, practice good hand-washing hygiene and limit close interactions.
We recognize that students may be celebrating St. Patrick's Day this week and we ask that you please do so responsibly. BGSU will host a Shamrock Social event this Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. on the Bowen-Thompson Quadrangle. Students can participate in a variety of activities at a safe distance, including games, crafts and more. There will also be free food, shirts and face masks. We hope you join us!
Testing continues to be a priority with free rapid and PCR testing available in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union for students, faculty and staff.
COVID-19 Vaccine Update
Today, Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine announced that Ohioans ages 40 and older will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine starting this Thursday, March 18. All Ohioans ages 16 and older will be eligible starting Monday, March 29. For more information on vaccines, and a list of provider locations, please visit Ohio’s coronavirus website, the Wood County Health Department website or the Erie County Health Department website.
BGSU is working closely with our partners in public health and will be hosting vaccination clinics on campus in the near future. More information will be available in the coming weeks. To help us better prepare, we are assessing the demand for vaccines in our campus community. Tomorrow we will be reaching out to students, faculty and staff to complete a vaccine interest survey. This is not a commitment, but will help us to more effectively prepare for vaccinations when supplies increase.
In order to facilitate large vaccination clinics, the Wood County Medical Reserve Corp (MRC) is looking for volunteers to support Wood County’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign. No specific experience is necessary, and volunteers are needed with medical and non-medical backgrounds. Learn more about the Wood County MRC and how to join.
Wellness Days
Next week, we will have two Wellness Days on Monday, March 22, and Tuesday, March 23. Students will not have classes, and BGSU faculty will not schedule any assignments, project deadlines or exams on these days. Instead, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of wellness programming and activities to relax and refocus during this well-deserved break.
Thank you for your flexibility, compassion and commitment as we work together to keep our campuses safe and healthy.
Be well,
Ben Batey signature
