This week's essential COVID-19 information from BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey

We are excited to welcome students, faculty and staff back to our campuses with the start of the spring semester. Over the last several weeks, we have been focused on safely returning to our campuses by increasing testing to actively identify positive cases and implement isolation plans before the start of the semester. This week’s COVID-19 dashboard, outlined in this email and on the Forward Falcons website, reflects the significant increase in our campus population and testing over the last 10 days.
While cases have increased, the majority of the active cases we are tracking were identified early through at-home testing, prior to students moving back to Bowling Green. We are really thankful for all of the students who took advantage of testing before the start of the semester. This has helped us to quickly identify positive cases and begin isolation, quarantines and contact tracing.
COVID-19 Testing
BGSU will continue to offer free COVID-19 tests to slow the spread of COVID-19 on our campuses. This testing in the first few weeks will be prioritized for students, as health care resources are limited and students are most likely to be returning from hometown communities and congregating in closer quarters. However, if a faculty or staff member who is working on-campus needs a COVID-19 test, they are also able to sign up.
Testing is by appointment. There are two options: a PCR test with results in 24 to 48 hours, and, a rapid test with results in 15 minutes. Both tests are a mid-nasal swab. Testing is taking place in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, with dates and times updated throughout the week on the Forward Falcons website. Sign up for your test now.
Campus Health and Safety Protocols
As we begin the spring semester, we will be diligent in practicing health and safety guidelines. This includes wearing a face covering, keeping a small social circle, maintaining 6 feet of physical distance and washing your hands often. Stay home if you are feeling ill, even with mild symptoms. Our campus testing is available if you wake up with or develop COVID-19 symptoms at any point. In addition, BGSU will continue to follow Ohio’s 10 p.m. curfew, which was recently extended.
We are looking forward to a great spring semester. Thank you for doing your part to keep our campuses as healthy and safe as possible.
Be well,

Community Talking Points
COVID-19 vaccines are not yet available for the general public, but supply is expected to increase during the coming months. As information becomes available about the next phases, the Wood County Health Department will share information with all local news media contacts, as well as BGSU.
The Wood County Health Department expects to continue receiving COVID-19 vaccine shipments but does not yet know how long it will take to provide vaccines to people who want them in Phase 1A. We will share more information as we receive it about Phase 1B. Visit the Wood County Health Department Vaccine page for more information and further details about each phase.
