This week's essential COVID-19 information from BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey

Watch BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey's February 23 Video Update
In this week’s COVID-19 update, cases continue to decline as compared to the previous week, as outlined in this email and on the Forward Falcons website. This week’s report marks the lowest number of COVID-19 cases in our campus community since the start of the academic year, and we thank our students, faculty and staff for their commitment to lowering their risk level and keeping our campuses safe and healthy.
While cases decline, testing remains a priority with free rapid and PCR testing available in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union for students, faculty and staff. Weekly randomized surveillance testing plays a critical role in our ability to track our overall positivity rate, and we are especially grateful to our students who have participated in this program.
We continue to work with our partners in public health to monitor trends in our campus community, county, region and state. While we have not detected variant strains of concern in our campus community, we are tracking this very closely. There is real reason to be hopeful with more vaccines reaching our communities every day and spring now just weeks away – but we must keep at it. Please continue to wear a face covering, keep a small social circle, maintain a safe physical distance and get tested if you are feeling ill or have been exposed to COVID-19.
Thank you for your flexibility and compassion. We are in this together and your actions are making a difference!
Be well,
Ben Batey signature

Latest Vaccine Information
COVID-19 vaccines continue to be in short supply everywhere. The Wood County Health Department and its partners are working together to ensure that all people who are currently eligible have opportunities to be vaccinated. We are committed to distributing vaccines as quickly as we receive them, and we are ready for the time when supply increases. Doses are not being stockpiled.
Currently people age 65 or older are eligible to be vaccinated. Also eligible are people with specific medical conditions that put them at greater risk for severe illness. Qualifying medical conditions can be found on the Ohio Department of Health Vaccination Program website. This includes early childhood medical conditions that are carried into adulthood.
As information becomes available about the next phases, the Wood County Health Department will share details with all local news media contacts, as well as BGSU. Visit the Wood County Health Department vaccine page for more information and further details about each phase.
