Safe Communities Coordinator
“The end goal is not about me and the other agencies, it’s about communities because we want our communities to be safe.”
Sandy Wiechman says she gets the most joy in her life by helping people. She has always been drawn to jobs and activities that involve working with others to make a difference.
Soon after graduating from Elmwood High School and Penta Career Center, Sandy began a successful 30-year career in public service working for the Bowling Green Municipal Court as a deputy clerk. She transitioned to a new challenge in 1987 working for the Wood County Sheriff's Office. For 25 years, Sandy contributed in various capacities as a deputy sheriff, and, although she was not a certified peace officer, Sandy used her skills to help people through the civil division of the sheriff's office.
“She knows a lot of people, and a lot of people know her. She’s really dedicated to what she’s doing.”
- Mike Stock, ABATE
Sandy worked under four sheriffs during her career. In the beginning, she worked as a records clerk for the jail. As her career progressed, she served as a grant writer and secured grants for the Citizen's Police Academies and the Crisis Intervention Team program. She also worked as a fiscal officer and was assigned to several community outreach programs.
As Sandy neared retirement in 2012, she began to think of ways to continue to use her skills to help others in the community. During this time, she was asked by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office to write a grant that would create a Safe Communities Coalition in Wood County. When she retired, the grant secured and Sandy accepted the job as the coordinator for the Safe Communities Coalition.
“Sandy is a facilitator of the idea of Safe Communities, and she is a bridge to bring different organizations together.”
- Major Justin White, BGPD.
Safe Communities is a partnership of individuals from law enforcement, local governments, schools, businesses, health departments, and community organizations that collaborates to create awareness and prevention of death and injuries caused by traffic crashes. In this position, Sandy organizes several events and activities such as Swallow Your Pride, Call for a Ride; Click It or Ticket; and the annual Distracted Driving Day at the Wood County Fair.
Sandy enjoys being involved at the Bowling Green Church of the Nazarene where she volunteers for many activities. Sandy also likes outdoor activities and especially enjoys spending time with family and friends.
Members of the Safe Communities Coalition contribute to the success of the program in a number of different ways. Members help buy any needed materials, supplies, and signage for events while also providing other necessary resources for events and fundraising opportunities. Members that are a part of Safe Communities provide support and accountability to the coordinator and the coalition as a whole.
New members are always welcome who are interested in assisting with coalition goals!
