This workshop will offer a variety of models of assignments and activities that provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning through reflection.  This workshop has been adapted to account for online learning and virtual course delivery.  Workshop goals and learning objectives include:

This workshop is an opportunity to see a demonstration of a new online community engagement tracking system, Collaboratory, and to learn about how you can share the public impact story of your community engagement activities by using this tool. Collaboratory is a centralized online platform for reporting, tracking, and sharing community engagement and public service work conducted by faculty, staff, students, and their community partners This activity could be in the form of teaching, research, public service, programs, and other campus/community partnerships. Earlier this year BGSU invested in Collaboratory and the BGSU Center for Public Impact was identified as the managing unit. The Collaboratory platform has both an external and internal component, which enables users to curate a publicly accessible record of their community-engaged work, while also providing institutional data for university strategic development, assessment, and benchmarking.  The Collaboratory will enhance BGSU’s ability to share our public impact story by providing a centralized location in which public impact work across BGSU and the greater Northwest Ohio community can be reported and shared. It will also enable us to map partnerships, identifying community partners who are engaged with several collaborators at BGSU, as well as opportunities to develop new impactful partnerships.

Community-based learning can be an effective pedagogy to address our current global crisis.  In this session you will gain information about important considerations to adapt an existing course or create a new course that includes remote community-based experiences.  Representatives from the Center for Public Impact will share best practices and resources. You will also hear from community partners directly about how the global pandemic has shifted their organizations’ focus, priorities, and operations.  These considerations will impact how to best collaborate with community partners for community-based learning courses and other partnerships.

This workshop will also address how faculty can communicate the value of their experience teaching community-based learning courses on their CV. Examples of how faculty have shared the products of their community-based learning courses with the community will be provided. Dr. Hanasono will also share her experience with accounting for community-based learning pedagogy in faculty evaluation.

Community-based learning pedagogy involves a non-traditional course structure; students and community members are partners in the learning process, students engage in regular reflection exercises, and assessments do not follow a standard grading structure.  Helping students navigate the complexities and ambiguities of community-based learning requires intentional preparation.

Guest speakers will discuss how they prepare students to engage in a community-based learning experiences to avoid common pitfalls and challenges.  Students will also be present to share some of their own experiences.

Spring 2016

Dr. Wendy Watson from the Gerontology Program will discussed her Spring 2016 community-based learning course where she utilized PhotoVoice, a model developed to utilize innovative participatory photography and digital storytelling methods to enable individuals to represent themselves and create tools for advocacy and communication.  In GERO 6530 Research Methods in Gerontology, Dr. Wendy Watson utilized the PhotoVoice model to conduct research with her students and older adults.  The aim of the project was to provide older adults with a voice through photography to share their expectations, observations, and experiences to more deeply examine their quality of life in Wood County.  Dr. Watson shared information about the design of her course, the PhotoVoice model, opportunities and challenges with the implementation of her course, and lessons learned along the way.

In this workshop faculty members from Environmental Studies and Theatre and Film shared how they integrated service-learning pedagogy into their courses.  They highlighted information about developing community partnerships, designing syllabi and learning activities, reflection elements, and opportunities and challenges encountered during their service-learning journey.

Join us for a conversation with Dr. Gabe Matney and Dr. Russell Mills regarding their designs of international service-learning courses.  Dr. Matney designed and implemented an international service-learning course focused on math education in Thailand.  Dr. Mills has designed an international service-learning course for Iceland to launch this May focused on sustainability and tourism in Iceland.  Both will share reflections about best practices in service-learning such as working with international community partners, establishing course learning outcomes, designing impactful learning activities, and navigating challenges of the process.  Michelle Ploegar from Education Abroad and International Programs will also be available with information about the process at BGSU for initiating a new study abroad course.

Join us for a Skype conversation with J.R. Jamison of The Facing Project. The Facing Project connects people through stories to strengthen communities. Their model guides communities as they enlist a team of writers to be paired one-on-one with citizens who are facing life circumstances that deserve to be shared to better educate the broader community.  The pairs meet, get to know each other and share stories of triumph and tragedy, of loneliness and community, of hate and happiness, of deep depression and lofty goals.  The writers will use their talents to take on the voice and persona of their subjects and write as if they were them – in the first person – bringing to life a voice that has been silenced, while keeping the anonymity of the subjects.  All projects culminate with a book to be shared throughout the community, and acted out by local actors through community theater and monologues – bringing a face to the voice.  Through these awareness outlets, communities can begin to sit down together to face the next steps of discovering new, grassroots solutions to the problem.

Impact Research for Service-Learning Practitioners: Instructor Reflections of Inquiry and Engagement

While the impact of service learning on students is well documented, woefully little research addresses the impact on instructors. Presenters will share findings of a research study, conducted in partnership with the Colorado Service-Learning Council, which included interviews with diverse service learning practitioners (faculty member, K12 teacher, nonprofit instructor, etc.) and institutions. The findings suggest that service learning instructors reap direct and indirect benefits including impacts on their teaching, relationships with students and fellow instructors, sense of personal civic engagement and intrinsic value, among others. By the end of the session, participants will: 1) gain an understanding of our research findings (i.e. the impacts of service learning on practitioners), 2) explore how these research findings can be applied/used to advance service learning and best support practitioners at their own institutions, and 3) have an increased awareness of the Colorado Service-Learning Council, including how others could replicate a similar collaborative group in their own state/region.

Designing an International Service-Learning Module for Students

Opportune Zongo, a 2014-2016 Service-Learning Faculty Learning Community participant, will discuss her experience designing of an international service-learning module for students in Burkina Faso. This is a one-month, 6-credit hour summer program based in the capital city of Ouagadougou.  There are two courses in the program taught by Professors from the University of Ouagadougou and the eminent filmmaker, Gaston Kaboré.  The program provides students the opportunity to explore the traditional and governmental systems that impact the everyday experiences of Burkinabè including as they relate to gender, education, health, employment, the media and the legal system.  The courses expand beyond Burkina Faso to include various elements of cultures in Africa, in general, and French-speaking African cultures, in particular.  In addition, the program offers students opportunities for experiential learning related to the courses through scheduled weekday and weekend community service activities at cultural, social, and educational sites including, the University of Ouagadougou, a technical school, orphanages, a rural school, and nature preserves.

Digital Storytelling as an Assessment Tool for Student Learning in Service-Learning

Integrating a digital storytelling assignment into your course can be an effective way to assess student learning related to service-learning course activities.  By the end of this session, participants will 1) gain an understanding of how to integrate digital storytelling into a course, 2) explore how to best prepare students for this type of assignment, and 3) have an increased awareness of the Office of Service-Learning and associated resources.

Spring 2015

Monday, March 23, 2015 from 1-2 pm in the Center for Faculty Excellence

Instructors Ken Garland and Stephen Merrill will share information about how they designed and implemented a service-learning course in telecommunications for the 2014-2015 academic year.  The students in the course filmed and produced LiveWire, a WBGU televised music series.  One aim of the course was to generate more excitement in the Bowling Green community about live music.  The course partnered with various national musicians as well as the local Clazel Theater.

Monday, February 23, 1-2 pm in the Center for Faculty Excellence

In fall 2014, students enrolled in ENG 2070: Intermediate Writing with a Service-Learning component were asked to explore personal, communal and disciplinary concepts of literacies and discourses of place. For the service-learning project, students chose a community agency to partner with and then completed several writing assignments in preparation and reflection of their experience. In this presentation, Rhetoric and Writing PhD candidate April Conway, along with three of her 2070 students, will discuss the learning outcomes, course concepts, assignments, and experiences of the service-learning project in this course.

Monday, January 26, 2015 from 1-2 pm in the Center for Faculty Excellence

Last year, students enrolled in COMM 3030: Persuasion partnered with Not in Our Town, Downtown BG, the United Way of Wood County, BGSU’s Student Technology Assistance Center, and the BG Farmers’ Market to invite community members to show their support for diversity and inclusion. In this multimedia presentation, Dr. Lisa Hanasono will discuss a series of service-learning projects and pedagogical approaches that positioned students to develop new communication skills, apply class concepts, develop their professional portfolios, build partnerships with nonprofit organizations, and make a positive impact in the local community.

Thursday, October 16, 2014, 10 – 11 a.m. in University Hall, Room 301

Listening Post started in Fall 2011 and is an academic course with a campus service-learning component. Non-judgmental listening in a supportive community environment is beneficial to the common good of a campus community. The Listening Post, cultivates developmental relationships with peers, undergraduate teaching assistants (UTAs), and co-instructors in two cohorts each semester: newbie and alumni. The use of alumni (students who have successfully completed the course) enhances developmental relationships and promotes course sustainability as alumni sustain the service of listening while the new cohort is trained. UTAs, alumni, and faculty will present their community experience based on peer teaching and other strategies while highlighting the service-learning course design and implementation.
