Community Description:

In this community we’ll explore how institutional data can guide us in adapting our teaching, programs, and systems to support student success. We will discuss how to access, analyze, and interpret institutional data to address questions related to student success and engagement.

We will engage with institutional data related to individual course analytics, academic performance, campus engagement, and degree progression disaggregated by demographic characteristics. A combination of resources from the university and the Data Literacy program offered by the Association for Institutional Research will guide our learning and discussion.

Throughout the semeser, you'll collaborate with peers to develop research questions tthat matter to your own teaching and academic programs. Using tools like Canvas, Navigate, PowerBI, Tableau, and more, we’ll gain hands-on experience with platforms that help us understand our students’ experiences.

Community Learning Outcomes:

By participating in this community, you will be able to:

  • Identify internal and external data sources that can be used to advance student success in the classroom (e.g., Canvas analytics) and at the departmental level (e.g., progression-based curricular reform, persistence, retention, and graduation rates).
  • Analyze data sources to identify patterns and gaps in outcomes among different student groups.
  • Reflect on how your background, experiences, and assumptions may impact how you interpret data and make instructional and programmatic decisions.
  • Design and implement a data-based project related to student success in your own teaching or academic context.
  • Collaboratively develop and foster a data-informed campus culture that promotes student learning, progress, and success.

Participant Expectations:

As a member of this community, you are expected to:

  • Meet the community learning outcomes.
  • Actively participate in and attend at least 80% of all scheduled community meetings (or meet the participation requirement determined by the facilitator).
