Community Participants: Current graduate student instructors and graduate student instructors preparing to teach in the upcoming semester are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
Community Description:
During the Graduate Teaching Community, we will explore what it means to find work/life balance as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA). Together, we’ll discuss how to organize your schedule, create a realistic plan for success, and develop strategies to support your teaching and learning.
Throughout your participation in this community, you will gather teaching strategies to use in your classes, begin drafting your teaching philosophy, and engage in meaningful activities that will help you on your teaching journey. We will have group discussions, collaborative activities, guest speakers, and other opportunities to support your success. By participating in the community, you will benefit from time networking with other GTAs, getting peer feedback, developing a regular commitment to growing your teaching practice, and enjoying time together in thought.
Community Learning Outcomes:
By participating in this community, you will be able to:
- Design a semester plan that supports your teaching responsibilities, academic progress, and personal well-being.
- Identify and implement in-class and online activities that foster student learning.
- Develop a network of fellow GTAs, peers, and mentors to help you navigate challenges.
- Design your own teaching philosophy and standards.
- Produce a Great Idea for Teaching (GIFT) or a concept you can share at a conference on the importance of studying your classroom practices.
Participant Expectations:
As a member of this community, you are expected to:
- Respect each other.
- Observe the Golden Rule (i.e., treat others the way you’d like to be treated).
- Attend at least 3 out of the scheduled 5 community meetings.
- Communicate with the facilitator and participate (to the best of your ability) in our discussions.
- Turn in deliverables that make you proud to share.
Registration for this community is now closed.
