Dr. Chad Hershock currently serves as director of faculty and graduate student programs at the Eberly Center for teaching excellence and educational innovation, and as an educator in the Mellon College of Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Hershock consults with and develops programs for faculty and graduate students on evidence-based teaching strategies, course design, effective uses of instructional technology and the assessment of student learning outcomes.
He also collaborates with faculty on the scholarship of teaching and learning in disciplines ranging from the arts to science and engineering. He has authored peer-reviewed journal articles as well as book chapters on pedagogy and the professional development of faculty and graduate students as educators.
Before joining the Eberly Center, Hershock served as assistant director at the University of Michigan’s center for research on learning and teaching, specializing in STEM education and instructional technology from 2005-2013. At the University of Michigan, he taught courses on biology, ecology, environmental education and evidence-based teaching in STEM disciplines.
In 2002, Hershock earned a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Michigan, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in ecology and evolutionary biology.
How Learning Works: Evidence-Based Teaching Strategies
60-minute interactive keynote presentation
Practice and feedback are critical, intertwined components of the learning process. What kinds of practice and feedback maximize student learning? What teaching strategies best support a novice’s development towards mastery? How can these strategies be applied effectively in face-to-face and online learning environments? In this interactive session, participants will discuss educational research findings regarding these questions (and more) and consider how to apply these principles of “how learning works” to their own teaching contexts. Session activities will model several evidence-based teaching techniques that can be implemented across disciplines.
Engaging Students Via Effectively Implementing Active Learning
90-minute interactive workshop
This session builds upon research results presented during the keynote presentation. Specifically, copious research suggests that students who actively engage with course material during class meetings learn more than students who only passively listen and take notes. Participants will take a deeper dive into active learning strategies, exploring how to best select and implement particular teaching techniques to support one’s goals for student learning. This hands-on, interactive session will introduce a menu of effective strategies for actively engaging students. Participants will experience a subset of the strategies as “students” and discuss how to implement these approaches effectively and efficiently, regardless of class size and discipline.
Space is limited to the first 120 Registrants.

Academic Technology Playground is a chance for you to learn about academic technologies available at BGSU to use in your classes. There will be representatives from TopHat, TechSmith (Camtasia), and a live webinar from Respondus on their LockDown Browser. These representatives will be available to demonstrate their products as well as answer any questions you may have about them.
