October is National Campus Sustainability Month!
Universities across the country are shining the spotlight on sustainability issues this month in order to spur action for change! BGSU has committed to taking a firm stance against global climate change by signing the Presidents' Climate Committment and completing a Climate Action Plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040! Now it's your chance to learn about and get involved with sustainability at BGSU and beyond!
Guest Lecture with Dr. Karen Root Oct. 23rd - 7:00PM - BTSU Room 207
Dr. Karen Root presents “Managing Land Use to Foster Native Biodiversity”. Today’s landscape is dominated by human activities which puts critically important, native species and ecosystems at risk for decline. Dr. Root’s lecture will focus on her research over the last 15 years. This research examines the question of whether our communities can develop strategies to make land use decisions more compatible for native species at the local and regional levels within the Oak Openings Region of Northwest Ohio, a biodiversity hotspot.
"We The People" Film Screening - Oct. 24th - 7:00PM - Overman Room 123
Grab a friend and bring a bag of popcorn! The Environmental Action Group in coordination with the Office of Campus Sustainability is screening the film “We the People 2.0”. This film contains exciting yet controversial topics about the loss of democracy in the United States through corporate power. The story unfolds through the eyes of rural people who have fought the injustices of toxic dumping, pipelines, drilling and mining in their communities. A discussion will be hosted after the screening to answer any questions, debunk myths, and gain knowledge from those in attendance.
Green Roof Open House - Oct. 25th - 3:00pm to 4:00pm - The Oaks
Join a guided tour of the Oaks Dining Center Green Roof and learn about how it was designed to benefit the environment and the building’s operations. Sustainable features will be discussed such as plant use, construction materials, and energy conservation.
ReStore - Oct. 25th - 11:00am to 1:00pm - Kreischer Late Night
Why buy new, when you can reuse? BGSU's "ReStore" returns Wednesday, October 25th! Surplus BGSU office equipment/ supplies are collected and made available to students and other campus offices instead of ordering new items. If you need any supplies, stop by anytime to collect free desk organizers, paper, 3- ring binders and much more! This event is open to all current students, faculty and staff. All supplies will be available in the Kreischer Late Night, which can be accessed by entering up the stairs facing the BGSU Rec Center. Tree Planting - Oct. 26th - 1:00pm to 3:00pm - Behind btsu
Help BGSU celebrate trees by getting hands on with planting one on our campus! This is your chance to get involved in our pursuit for the Tree Campus USA certification through the Arbor Day Foundation! Shovels and other equipment will be provided, please wear appropriate footwear.
Chemical "Roundup" - Oct. 26th
BGSU’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety, in coordination with Campus Sustainability is “rounding up” all old or unused chemicals & paint to ensure environmentally safe disposal. The items will be picked up from all BGSU Departments. UNIVERSITY ITEMS ONLY; NO PERSONAL ITEMS. Acceptable Items Include: Used/expired chemicals, cleaning supplies, paint, and mercury containing items, pesticides & fertilizers. Request Deadline: Friday, October 20th, 2017. To request a pick-up, please fill out the attached sheet and submit (via email/campus mail) to Jeremy Dick (email@example.com), The Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Solar Tour - Oct. 27th - 2:00pm
Take a tour of Ohio’s largest solar field! On this trip to the DG AMP Solar Field on Carter Road, you will get up close with the solar panels. The tour will teach you about the production, supply, and economics of solar energy. Sign up soon because there are only 40 spots available! Registration Deadline: October 20, 2017.
