College of Business Department Chair Annual Evaluation Form

This evaluation is only for the Chair duties, not for teaching and research. Rate the Department Chair on each of the following responsibilities. Any rating below a 3 must include a description of the reasoning and examples of the associated behavior.

  1. The Chair exercises leadership in the articulation and formulation of departmental missions, programs, goals, procedures, and policies; implements the policies of the department and serve as the chief representative of the department.

  2. The Chair promotes the best interests of the department, its faculty, and its students within the college, University, and the scholarly community at large except as it may relate to subjects covered by a collective bargaining unit.

  5. The Chair initiates all departmental recommendations concerning faculty and academic staff, new appointments, reappointments, salary changes, terminations of contracts, recommendations for tenure, leaves of absence, promotions, assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships in accordance with the principles set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University and the BGSU Faculty Association and provisions of the Charter.

  6. The Chair is responsible for the articulation and explanation of recommendations made under 5, including an evaluation with the appropriate committee report.

  7. The Chair administers and supervises the activities of the nonacademic departmental staff, makes budget recommendations, manages the expenditures of departmental funds, supervises the use of departmental facilities (equipment, space, supplies, and inventory), and works with the directors of various University units to maximize the resources available for the department's use in its various activities.

  8. The Chair coordinates the departmental staff, decides matters of faculty work load, arranges all teaching schedules, coordinates all departmental programs, promotes the most effective use of departmental resources, strives to improve the quality of the teaching and research activities of the department, strives to improve the curricular offerings and the academic programs of the department, initiates and considers proposals for changes in the curricula (including graduate programs) and forwards them to the Dean for disposition.

  9. The Chair assumes an appropriate teaching load in consultation with the Dean. Each Chair shall normally have some teaching duties each academic year. The teaching load shall depend on the needs of the department and the demands of administrative duties.

  10. The Chair establishes and maintains relationships with alumni, employers, potential employers, and other community members that have an interest in working with the Department. The Chair assists with alumni relations through newsletters, alumni events, thank you notes, and advisory board meetings and assists in the placement of students.

  11. As a faculty member in a faculty administrator role, the Chair maintains appropriate AACSB faculty qualification. Activities other than research, such as participating in developmental activities that are administrative in focus and related to leadership roles and responsibilities (e.g. attending a workshop on assessment or accreditation) may be used to maintain original qualification status. The Chair supports the efforts of the college in maintaining AACSB accreditation by ensuring department faculty maintain appropriate sufficiency and qualifications and participate in curriculum management including assurance of learning.

  12. The Chair works in collaboration with center/institute directors to increase the effectiveness of the center/institute, if applicable.
