College of Business Teaching Load Policy

Instructor, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer (Non-tenure track faculty, NTTF)*

*Research cannot be part of NTTF workload agreement.

  • The teaching load for NTTF who is AACSB qualified is 24 credit hours per academic year. This typically is accomplished by teaching 4 three-credit courses each semester, i.e. a 4-4 load.
  • If an NTTF is not a Scholarly Academic, Practicing Academic, Scholarly Practitioner, or Instructional Practitioner based on the CBA Faculty Qualifications document, the teaching load shall be 27 credit hours, i.e. a 5-4 teaching load.
  • If an NTTF is not a Scholarly Academic, Scholarly Practitioner or Instructional Practitioner based on the COB Faculty Qualifications document by the time term courses are scheduled, the faculty will not be allowed to teach summer courses, winter session courses or overload.

Assistant Professor

  • For an Assistant Professor making satisfactory progress toward tenure and promotion, the academic year teaching load is 15 credit hours. This typically is accomplished by teaching 3 three-credit courses one semester and 2 three-credit courses the other, i.e. a 3-2 load.
  • If progress toward tenure and promotion is not satisfactory and a terminal contract is issued, the teaching load during the term of the terminal contract shall be 18 credit hours, i.e. a 3-3 teaching load.
  • If an Assistant Professor is not a Scholarly Academic or Practicing Academic based on the COB Faculty Qualifications document by the time term courses are scheduled, the faculty will not be allowed to teach summer courses, winter session courses or overload.

Associate Professor

  • The base academic year teaching load for an Associate Professor with tenure is 18 credit hours. This typically is accomplished by teaching 3 three-credit courses each semester, i.e. a 3-3 load.
  • If performance is such that progress toward promotion to Professor is satisfactory, the teaching load shall be reduced to 15 credit hours, i.e. a 3-2 teaching load.
  • Faculty that are hired as untenured Associate Professors that are making satisfactory progress toward tenure shall have a teaching load of 15 credit hours, i.e. a 3-2 teaching load.
  • Scholarly Academic faculty that have been Associate Professor for more than 10 years have not shown satisfactory progress toward promotion to Professor and shall have a teaching load of 18 credit hours, i.e. a 3-3 teaching load.
  • If an Associate Professor is not a Scholarly Academic based on the CBA Faculty Qualifications document, the teaching load shall be 21 credit hours, i.e. a 4-3 teaching load.
  • If an Associate Professor is not a Scholarly Academic or Practicing Academic based on the COB Faculty Qualifications document by the time term courses are scheduled, the faculty will not be allowed to teach summer courses, winter session courses or overload.

Professor

  • The base academic year teaching load for a Professor is 18 credit hours. This typically is accomplished by teaching 3 three-credit courses each semester, i.e. a 3-3 load.
  • If performance is at or above that required for promotion to Professor, the teaching load shall be reduced to 15 credit hours, i.e. a 3-2 teaching load.
  • If a Professor is not a Scholarly Academic based on the CBA Faculty Qualifications document, the teaching load shall be 21 credit hours, i.e. a 4-3 teaching load.
  • If a Professor is not a Scholarly Academic or Practicing Academic based on the COB Faculty Qualifications document by the time term courses are scheduled, the faculty will not be allowed to teach summer courses, winter session courses or overload.

Sections with enrollment of 100 or more count as two sections for teaching load purposes.

The teaching load may be adjusted based on service activities above and beyond usual service expectations. The table below specifies the reduction in teaching load by activity. No stipends are paid for these activities from the College budget. Departments may choose to pay a stipend from their own funds.
