My writing philosophy is simple: produce better writers; not better writing. I believe that giving students the tools necessary to improve as writers so that they are able to improve their own writing, in and out of the classroom, is the most important thing a writing instructor can do. As this is my philosophy, I believe in a lot of hands on work for the students as opposed to lecturing.

I also believe that writing is a deeply personal yet social practice; all writers need readers, and there is no better place for readers than in a classroom surrounded by your peers. My favorite quote about writing is a Stephen King quote from his book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, and it states: “Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open.” This quote brings together the personal and social aspects of writing perfectly. This is a philosophy I hope to practice in my classroom, and I hope my students can feel and come to understand both the personal and social aspects of writing as they leave my class.
