Nonmaternal Child Care Role Strain and Maternal Sensitivity in the First Three Years

Nonmaternal Care, Role Strain, and Maternal Sensitivity in the First Three Years
NICHD R03

This project examines the associations between nonmaternal care characteristics (i.e., type, amount, quality, and stability) and parenting quality among mothers with young children. I focus on mothers’ stress and mental health as a mediating factor and their financial and social resources (e.g., income, partnership status) as moderating factors. Specific questions include:

  1. How are nonmaternal care characteristics related to mothers’ sensitive parenting?
  2. How are nonmaternal care characteristics related to mothers’ role strains, such as parenting stress and work-family conflict?
  3. How are mothers’ role strains (i.e., parenting stress and work-family conflict) related to mothers’ sensitive parenting?

Data from the NICHD Study of Early Childhood and Youth Development (SECCYD), the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K), and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) are used.
