What is BGSUConnect?

BGSUConnect allows you to help students learn from your college and career experience. As an alumni member, you can utilize BGSUConnect to become a mentor or adviser to current BGSU students

BGSUConnect was built with your busy schedule in mind. The program allows alumni to control their availability and level of participation with the ability to limit the number of inbound meeting requests per month.

What makes a successful mentor?

As a BGSU Alumni Mentor, you are a guide, friend and resource who shares your education and professional experience to pave the way for current students to succeed at BGSU and beyond. You'll help your mentees set goals, support their personal and professional development, model professional behavior, and challenge them to go beyond their comfort zone in some way in order to achieve personal growth.

You are NOT expected to offer jobs or internships to your mentee, or to have all the answers!

Mentoring Basics

Why become a mentor?

Alumni become mentors for a variety of reasons. It feels great to pay it forward and help other members of the community unlock their potential. You also can learn from your mentee (or even find the next hire for your team). Lastly, you are sure to build coaching and leadership skills along the way.

How does it work for mentors?

First, complete your profile. You can use LinkedIn to automatically fill in some of your  information. Set your availability preferences to indicate how much time you can commit and how many mentees you can support at one time.

If you get a request we hope you'll accept it, but you do have the option to decline a student if you simply don't have time or think it's the wrong fit. We recommend you aim to connect with your mentee once every couple weeks, but ultimately you decide what works best for you and your mentee.

What is expected of me as a mentor?

Share your experiences and career journey with your mentees. Help your mentees define their own goals and support them as they work toward those goals. Be a resource to your mentees as they develop their career interests and face new challenges. Stay committed to the mentoring connection and make an effort to communicate regularly with your mentees (we tell them the same thing!).

I’m not receiving messages from students consistently, what do I do?

Be sure to check your spam folder for any potential lost messages. If this problem continues to persist, message us by clicking the Help button at the bottom left and we’ll help resolve the issue.

It can sometimes take a while for a potential mentee to discover you or for you to get matched depending on the size of the program, so please be patient!
