A degree in English isn’t just about Shakespeare and grammar – it teaches students to use language to transform society through the tools of the 21st century. Our students engage in rigorous training in the art of writing, developing their skills in preparation for a variety of careers in industry, publishing, teaching, and law, as well as well as literary authorship.

Our Creative Writing program is one of the oldest and most successful writing programs in the nation, with hundreds of publications, award-winning books, and major prizes to its credit. In fact, Poets & Writers has ranked the Creative Writing program at BGSU 30th in popularity out of 150 MFA full-residency programs, and 15th nationally in job placement.

Award-winning recognition of our graduates includes the Yale Younger Poets Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA Individual Artist Fellowships, The National Contemporary Poetry Award and The American Book Award.
