Title of Event: Dr. Lance R. Williams: Beyond Visualization: Explorations in Reified Computation in a Virtual World
Description: This lecture will cover both art and computer science topics for an audience of non-specialists illustrated by means of working models within Second Life.
Many ideas in computer science began initially with a physical analogy and ended up as mathematical abstractions. Reification turns this trajectory on its head--the underlying physical analogy returns in the form of unusually literal implementations that are only possible inside of a virtual world. Dr. Williams will illustrate this concept with multiple examples including Alan Turing's famous idealized computer, the Turing Machine, Conway's celebrated Game of Life, and finally, a reified implementation of the Scheme programming language. He will also touch on other topics such as programming in Linden Scripting Language (at a very basic level), artificial life and self-replicating machines, and the construction of wireframe models of Euclidean solids and Buckyball's inside the game.

Title of Event: Dr. Lance R. Williams: Implementing the Scheme Programming Language in a Virtual World
Description: Because Second Life supports a programming model where a large number of small scripts execute in parallel and asynchronously, and communicate via message passing, it is an ideal testbed for research in many areas of computer science, including distributed computing, swarm robotics, self-assembly, distributed sensor networks, and artificial life.
In this talk, Dr. Lance R. Williams will first provide an overview of Second Life and its programming model. He then will describe and demonstrate a series of evaluators for the Scheme programming language which he have constructed inside the game, including one evaluator where the heap and virtual machine are represented in a completely distributed fashion as a school of swimming fish. In this way, he hopes to illustrate Second Life's value to computer science pedagogy and as a testbed for research in distributed computation.

Title of Event: Disco of Duality: Real/Second Life Fusion (as part of the Arts Xtravaganza)
Description: For the second year in a row, the BGSU Virtual Campus in Second Life will be dimming the lights, turning up the sound system, and bringing a lively electronic dance music event from the real world into Second Life and back again. With four DJs spanning across four hours (Brian Scavo aka DJ What the Bleep and Jordan Harris aka DJ PsysiX plus two additional special guest DJs), the Fine Arts center will be turned into a dancefloor spectacle of epic proportions. Sharp beats, fervent dance, and a trip to an alternate reality, the Disco of Duality will be like nothing the Arts Xtravaganza has ever seen.

Title of Event: Computational Aesthetics '08 Art Exhibition Reception
Description: Computational Aesthetics '08 Art Exhibition Reception will take place at the Bowling Green State University Virtual campus in Second Life and at the Hotel Riviera in Lisbon, Portugal.
Computational Aesthetics bridges the analytic and synthetic and integrates aspects of computer science, philosophy, psychology, and the fine & performing arts. In particular it focuses on the mathematical and information theoretic aspects of both connectionist and symbol processing methods by humans and computers.
Computational Aesthetics seeks to facilitate both the analysis and the augmentation of creative behavior. It investigates the creation of tools that can enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and furthers our understanding of aesthetic evaluation, perception, and meaning. Invited talks will be given by individuals involved in the technical, artistic, and theoretical aspects of this young field to help participants better understand what aesthetics is, what computer technology is currently capable of delivering, and to appreciate what is involved in the creative process.

Title of Event: BGSU Virtual Campus Earth/Birth Day
Description: The Bowling Green State University virtual campus in Second Life is celebrating its first birthday in conjunction with an Earth Day celebration in the virtual world on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 – 8:30pm EST. The festivities will include poetry readings, art exhibition openings, live music by BGSU student DJs, with the evening culminating with a “Save the Virtual Island” scavenger hunt. The event will take place on the Bowling Green State virtual campus in Second Life and simultaneously presented in the lobby of the Bowen Thompson Student Union.
The Birth/Earth day celebration will begin with an Open Mic poetry reading at the BGSU Writing Center in Second Life. Students, faculty and staff are invited to "step up to the mic" at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, where their words will be broadcast into Second Life. The BGSU Virtual Campus is also proud to host an amazing art installation by Jeff Lovett from Ohio University. His work explores the concept of observation and surveillance through photography and virtual immersion. Artworks produced by members of the Computer Art Club and Digital Arts students will also be displayed in the Vertical Gallery and avatars are invited to “fly” through the gallery. Live music by BGSU student DJs, What the Bleep and DJ PsysiX, will be streamed into the Performance Center in Second Life from the BGSU Student Union. Avatars are invited to socialize and dance to the sounds of Ragga-Jungle and Psytrance music.
A special Earth Day scavenger hunt on the BGSU Virtual Campus will also accompany the festivities, beginning promptly at 7:30pm EST. Avatars will compete in a quest to find information on how to help combat global climate change. The first three avatars to find all the clues will be awarded prizes in Linden dollars. Participants will face simulated elements of climate change and environmental disaster that will be both challenging and thought provoking.
