What is Psi Chi?
At BGSU, Psi Chi is a student organization dedicated to fellowship, scholarship, and the sharing of graduate school information among psychology majors and minors. At the national level, Psi Chi is a (if not the) national honors society in psychology. Joining Psi Chi the national organization is not necessary to attend our regular meetings. For information on the how to join the national organization, and discussion of the benefits of doing so, come to our meetings, or speak with your academic advisor, or visit Psi Chi's website, psichi.org.
But you can come to our meetings even if you don't join! Psi Chi at BGSU (also known as the Undergraduate Psychology Association) is open any psychology major or minor. We have been expanding our activities over the past year to include not only discussions about graduate school opportunities lead by graduate students and professors, but also informative lectures on various topics, a stress clinic, and a field trip to one of Wood or Lucas county's nearby mental health hospitals.
Psi Chi meetings are usually informal and very comfortable, no awkward throw the ball around a circle and say your name stuff here. Come in, sit down, there will be a speaker, ask questions or just sit and listen, it's up to you.
What's the difference between Psi Chi and Psychology Club?
It's confusing, we know. Psi Chi at BGSU is also called the Undergraduate Psychology Association (UPA) as well as Psychology Club. We are called Psi Chi to indicate our affiliation with the national organization, and recognition of its values in our organization. UPA is the all-inclusive organization we are registered as with Bowling Green State University. If you never join the national organization Psi Chi, but you attend our meetings anyway, and pay the lesser dues, you're essentially a member of UPA. Psychology Club is what we most often call ourselves, as a kind of intuitive short hand for the Psi Chi / UPA group.
To clarify: Psi Chi meetings and UPA meetings are the same meetings, there is no seperation. Come to the meetings, talk to your advisor, and visit PsiChi.org for information about being a member of the national organization.
