Urban Plunge

An urban plunge is a mission trip in which students enter into an urban environment to serve and pray with the poor.  It is also a time of spiritual growth for the participants and an opportunity to form an authentic Christian community.

Catholic Newman Club is pleased to offer an urban plunge during the Fall Breaks at BGSU.  The men and women who go on these mission trips are transformed through their encounter with Christ in the poor and Christ in each other.  They are transformed by this intimate experience of Church.

During the Urban Plunge, students serve the poor, pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and celebrate Holy Mass.  Additionally, they receive formation in the Catholic Social Doctrine that they are putting into practice on this mission trip.

It is truly a wonderful time.

Alternative Spring Break 2007

For the Spring Break of 2007, students from BGSU went to Louisa, Kentucky to serve the poor at Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center.  It was a wonderful time in which we did serve, but also grew in our spiritual lives and formed a great community.

While there, we helped prepare a retreat house for couples in troubled marriages, organized a warehouse, and made improvements to a house that will serve as a drug rehab center.  During this time, we also encounter Father Beiting.  Father Beiting is a priest who had dedicated his life to serving the poor of Appalachia and building up the Catholic Church there.

Annual Winter Formal

Early in the Spring semester, Catholic Newman Club puts on a charity formal.  This event raises money for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society that is based out of Saint Thomas More University Parish.  The Saint Vincent de Paul food pantry serves over 400 families a year.  It is one of the ways in which Catholic Newman Club carries out its mission and helps the overall out reach at the parish.  In doing so, Catholic Newman Club serves the parish.

The Charity Formal is an opportunity to get all dressed up and have fun while helping those in need.  The night begins with a nice meal served in Seton Hall at Saint Thomas More.  After the meal, we go over to the student union to dance the night away.  All proceeds are donated to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Charity Formal 2008
