Synchronized Skating team - The Falconettes
History of the Team

For the past thirty-seven years BGSU has had a synchronized skating team which has performed at five home hockey games each year, various away games, and occasional ice shows and competitions. The team gave visibility to figure skating at the varsity hockey games and offered a unique chance for student figure skaters to continue skating after entering college. The synchro program here at Bowling Green was unique; we were one of only a few Mid-Western universities to have an ice arena and the only one with a team.

There have been many changes over three and a half decades: other schools in the area have built ice arenas, formed varsity hockey teams, and introduced synchronized skating at their universities. There was now an opportunity for us to compete with other collegiate teams, so in 1996 the team members decided to devote themselves to establishing a competitive collegiate team.  In fact, the team participated in the innagural collegiate event held at nationals in Syracuse, NY in March, 1997.

There was excitement in the air during the Collegiate event this year. The teams skated just before the Senior division with Bowling Green placing 2nd and Miami finishing 1st. Bowling Green performed a program choreographed with the assistance of Sundae Bafo-LeBel to a medley of New York songs. Although only two schools entered, the stage was set for the growth of this competitive division for years to come

Since this time, the team has traveled to the nationals in San Diego, CA (1998 and 2004), Tampa, FL (1999), Plymouth, MI. (2000), Colorado Springs (2001),Lake Placid, NY (2002), Huntsville, AL (2003) and Boston (2005).

In 1997, BGSU became a member of an intercollegiate conference devoted to synchronized team skating as well as singles skating. The conference now consists of teams from Ohio State University, Miami University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Northern Michigan, Notre Dame, the University of Illinois, Grand Valley State University, and Western Michigan University as well as BGSU. The conference hosts three competitions each year at the various home rinks of its members.
