The History of Phi Sigma Pi
Since its founding on February 14, 1916 by Claude H. McClure, Eldo L. Hendricks, and Claude A. Philips at Central Missouri State University, Phi Sigma Pi has evolved from an honorary professional fraternity, to a professional education fraternity, and finally into an honor fraternity open to all majors in 1966. Following the Title IX Ruling, Phi Sigma Pi became coeducational in 1977.
Today, Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity has more than 4,700 members and more than 90 chapters throughout the United States. Phi Sigma Pi also has more than 22,000 alumni members.
The Epsilon Beta Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi was founded at Bowling Green State University on December 9, 2002.
The Phi Sigma Pi Tripod
Phi Sigma Pi is based on a tripod of Scholarship, Leadership, and Fellowship. The fraternity's founders chose a tripod because a tripod relies on all three legs to stand up. All three legs of the tripod must be equally emphasized or else the fraternity will too closely resemble an honor society, leadership group, or social fraternity.
Mission
In carrying out the purpose of the National Fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi shall strive to personify and encourage three ideals:
1. The acquisition and dissemination of information and knowledge through scholarship,
2. The application of professional skills and the fostering of leadership qualities by promoting
and advancing the welfare of humanity, and
3. The fostering of non-discriminatory, fraternal fellowship within Phi Sigma Pi's ranks. |
