Mortar Board's Values
Mortar Board's central values are scholarship, leadership, and service. Our members are selected because they have contributed to the campus and surrounding communities based on these values. Members in Mortar Board participate in projects, events and programming that help to further emphasize these values.
Scholarship
Mortar Board members are selected from the top 35% of the school's senior class or seniors with a 3.5 GPA or higher (whichever is higher). As a result, our membership is made up of students who have shown a clear dedication to academic achievement.
Leadership
Mortar Board's members are selected not only for their academic achievements, but also for their leadership skills. Our membership is made up of the best leaders on campus. They have proven their skills as executives in other organizations, through non-University-related venues, or simply through general involvement at Bowling Green. These organizations and positions reach across the entire spectrum of involvement at Bowling Green State University and in the surrounding community and truly represent the interdisciplinary excellence for which Mortar Board is known.
Service
Our commitment to service is expressed through our many service projects and fundraisers. Our national project is Reading is Leading. You can find more information about this project here and here (.pdf)
In recent years our chapter has participated in projects ranging from holiday donation drives to fundraising projects. Some specific projects include:
- AFSP Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk
- Thanksgiving & Christmas Adopt-a-Family Projects
- Christmas Toy Donation Drive
- Ronald McDonald House Pop-tab Collection
- Book Drives
- FirstBook & Mortar Board's Virtual Book Drive (.pdf)
One of the newest and biggest service projects that our chapter has created is the Living Book Presentation in which we will present a popular children's book on stage for attendees of Bowling Green State University's "Sibs 'n' Kids Weekend." Our members will write a script, create sets and props, rehearse, and ultimately perform the play in an effor to encourage children to see the fun in reading.
