Winter Wheat
The Mid-American Review Festival of Writing

12-14 November 2009
Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green, Ohio
Sessions will be offered for beginners--those who are curious about getting started with writing--through professionals, who can get help in areas like polishing their finished work or marketing their manuscripts. There is something for every writer at Winter Wheat.

What is Winter Wheat? We're glad you asked!
Thursday is more scholarly-oriented, often with focused, large group discussions. 2006 saw the first-ever State of the Art Symposium, which focused on the intricacies of one genre. In 2006, we focused on nonfiction; in 2007, we talked about fiction; and we we had a great discussion of poetry in 2008. These panels are structured to appeal to those in the genre, as well as those who are beginners.
Friday and Saturday are filled with more craft-oriented sessions, but this is not a hard and fast rule. There are sessions like "Reinventing the Sonnet" or "Beginning Nonfiction" or "The Found Fiction." Friday's sessions begin in the afternoon and are followed by a reading by one of our featured readers. This is followed by the annual roundtable discussion, which, in 2006, discussed "The Impact of the Short-Short" in all genres. We talked about "Electronic Publishing" in 2007. The roundtable topic for 2008 was MFA Publishing.
Saturday is the big day. There is a bookfair, filled with literary journals, as well as a table for presenters to sell their books. The sessions (four time slots) run all day. Click here to view the session listings for Winter Wheat 2009. There is a reading in the afternoon by one of the featured readers, followed by the gala dinner, dessert reception, the last of the featured readers reading, and then the annual Open Mic, which is always a lot of fun.

Details regarding Winter Wheat 2009 will continue to appear on this site as the festival draws closer. If you'd like specific information, please contact Karen Craigo at karenka@bgsu.edu .
