| MISSION OF THE KARATE FOR KIDS CLASS:
We learn karate to practice a traditional art form, and
to develop self-defense capabilities. We also develop
skills that can be used in sport competition. Within
limits of safety, we focus on Techniques that have
practical application, taught according to a student's
ability to learn. Students are encouraged to improve
their skills through 'solo practice. The learning process
is further Enhanced by cooperation and teamwork with
classmates and instructors. With progressive development
of skill, knowledge, and conditioning, students will
recognize improvement, and accomplish goals. The class
will provide an opportunity for exercise and personal
development that can be continued from white belt to
black belt. Objectives of the Karate Program: -Develop an appreciation for exercise that can
be applied to all sports and physical activities.
Introduce methodology of safe and practical exercises
that condition the body for all types of movement, not
just specific Karate technique. Teach the methods of
stretching and conditioning that will be applicable to
all sports. -Focus primarily on karate technique that has
practical application, and has universal ability to apply
against a majority of opponents, and can be accomplished
by a majority of students. -Inspire in students the desire to improve their
own skills, by solo practice, as well as learn to
appreciate that we need cooperation and teamwork to
accomplish the greatest amount of improvement. -Emphasis on safety, that all students may enjoy practicing Karate without the fear of injury. Also, understanding that one's abilities have potential harm to others if misapplied, and that those abilities should only be used in self-defense. -Practice and continue traditional cultural
"habits" (wearing of the gi, bowing, belt
tying, etc.) that are associated with the
"oriental" martial arts, out of respect for our
heritage. -Study of technique and kata application and interpretation, so that the student can decide those techniques that are best suited for his/her personal use, and understand the effect of those techniques against an opponent. -Establish the use of "goal
accomplishment" to achieve higher goals, i.e. the
use of ranks as a means of recognizing improvement. - Progression of technique according to complexity,
and - Encourage the use of karate as a means of practicing
and continuing a traditional art form, a practical form
of self-defense, and as a competitive form of sport. |
