Traditional Chinese Festival Celebrations

Every year, CSSA sponsors two important traditional Chinese festival celebrations. They are all observed according to Chinese lunar calendar, with Mid-autumn Festival Celebration in fall semester and Spring Festival Celebration in spring semester.

Just several days around Chinese Mid-autumn Festival, CSSA holds a celebration of this special occasion.

The celebration features the observation of the Mid-autumn Festival, and the appreciation of Chinese poetry, painting, and calligraphy. There are games, raffles, and other activities at the party too. Here you can eat traditional Mid-autumn dinner, enjoy first-rate performances, and meet both Chinese and international friends.

And it is free. Come with your friends and have fun!

Dinner

Mooncakes, symbolizing family unity and perfection, are surely one of the must for this dinner. They are fresh and are made in China. There are a variety of mooncakes for you to choose from, like the mixed nuts mooncake, red-date mooncake, coconut mooncake, lotus seed mooncake and red bean mooncake. Some other food of Western style, like pizza, dessert and salad are also available.

Performance

After dinner comes the performance.

The programs vary from from singing, dancing, juggling, to solo. While most of the perfomers are Chinese students or staff from BGSU, there are also performers from some nearby universities, and from international friends. They work together and offer the audience an unforgettable night.

Raffle

There's a raffle with good prizes to go at the party. Usually the prizes are some traditional Chinese gifts for the Mid-autumn Festival.

Volunteers Needed

To ensure the success of the party, lots of volunteers, both performers and helpers, are needed.

How to apply?

  • Usually one month before the party, CSSA officers send out an email on China Listproc, announcing the time and place for the party, and calling for volunteer performers and helpers.
  • Just answer the email, telling the officers what you would like to do at the party. The officers will then contact you and arrange the specifics with you.

Serving at our own party as the hosts or hostesses, you will contribute greatly to the celebration, and have lots of fun.

2001

Spring Festical Celebration is the biggest and most important event sponsored by CSSA throughout each year. It is held around the Chinese new year on the lunar calendar, and offers authentic Chinese food and entertainment.

Spring Festival Celebration is not only a special occasion for Chinese, but also for internationals who are interested in China and Chinese culture. Here, you can see people, both Chinese and internationals, in traditional Chinese festival attire and immersed in the happy celebration.

Dinner

Surely Spring Festival dinner can not go without Chinese dumplings. They can be boiled or fried, and the fillings are different for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Western food like pizza, dessert and salad are also available. Beverages are of large variety too, including carbonated soft drinks, juice, coffee, tea, and water.

Performance

The performance comes right after the dinner. The programs are mainly traditional Chinese programs for celebrations, like singing, dancing, Taichi displays, cross-talk, mime, fashion shows (in traditional Chinese costumes), and many others. There are also performances like piano solo, violin solo, chorus, and juggling. The programs and performers for each year can be different, but the theme, the purpose and the enthusiasm always remain the same.

While most perfomers are Chinese students or staff from BGSU, there are also performers from nearby universities, and from international friends. Their collective effort makes each party a great success and their selfless contribution to both the Chinese community at BGSU and BG community are always remembered and appreciated.

Raffle

Tickets are required for this celebration. They are usually available in the hall of Bompson-Thompson Students Union three or fours days ahead of the celebration. The price is usually from five to ten dollars each.
