Welcome to the African American Graduate Students Association Webpage!

About Us
Graduate school for many students of color is experienced differently compared to their white counterparts, especially African American students. Although African American students are making great gains in graduate school, the quality of their education and success are not comparable to other racial/ethnic groups. The quality and satisfaction of graduate education depends upon the type of institution the student attends.

The academic literature suggests that African American graduate students tend to experience more difficulty at predominately-white institutions than white students and those who attend universities that are predominately African American. Higher education literature, which focuses on African Americans, argues that university/department climate, social atmosphere, and faculty-student interactions are some of the problems that African American graduate students face at predominately white institutions.

The purpose of this organization is to provide resources that will help you navigate your academic journey successfully. We will program and create events that will hopefully meet your professional and academic needs as a student of color. It is our hope that you will leave this university satisfied with your graduate education and most importantly, with your degree.

Goals

Like any organization, AAGSA has set out to meet certain objectivess that we feel will help uplift the greater African American graduate community at BGSU. Those goals include:

• To provide a conceptual analysis of the status and role of minority and international graduate students at Bowling Green State University.

• To promote scholarship among minority and international graduate students.

• To promote cultural diversity at Bowling Green State University.

• To encourage and promote (a) ethnic and minority issues and (b) issues of importance to international students which will provide them with a deeper understanding of our society and their relation with America.

• To promote the artistic and literary interests of minority and international graduate students.

• To accomplish these objectives, the African American Graduate Student Association sponsors conferences, workshops, seminars, discussion groups, films, and other campus activities which will promote the aforementioned goals and objectives.
